THE STRENGTHENING IS SECURED THROUGH CONSECUTIVE ION EXCHANGE REACTIONS WHEREIN LITHIUM IONS FROM AN EXTERNAL SOURCE ARE FIRST EXCHANGED FOR MAGNESIUM IONS IN THE BETA-QUATRZ WITHIN A SURFACE LAYER ON THE ARTICLE AND THEREAFTER SODIUM AND/OR POTASSIUM IONS FROM AN EXTERNAL SOURCE ARE EXCHANGED FOR THE LITHIUM IONS DIFFUSED INTO THE STRUCTURE OF THE BETA-QUARTZ DURING THE FIRST EXCHANGE. THIS CONSECUTIVE ION EXCHANGE DOES NOT ALTER THE ESSENTIAL STRUCTURAL NATURE OF THE BETA-QUARTZ CRYSTALS BUT DOES CAUSE COMPRESSIVE STRESSES TO BE DEVELOPED IN THE SURFACE LAYER.

    摘要: Processes for the preparation of base metal titanate catalysts in situ on refractory ceramic support structures which provide devices of significantly improved catalytic efficiency particularly suited for automotive exhaust emissions control applications are described. The base metal titanate catalysts comprise titaniferous crystal phases of spinel, ilmenite and/or pseudobrookite structure which consist essentially, in weight percent on the oxide basis, of about 15-85% TiO2, 15-70% M''''o, wherein M'''' is Mn 2, Co 2, Fe 2 or Cu 2, and 0-60% M2''''''O3, wherein M'''''' is A1 3, Fe 3, Cr 3, Mn 3 or Co 3. The process comprises preparing a solution of compounds of the desired metals, coating a refractory ceramic support structure with the solution, precipitating the desired metals from the solution onto the support structure as a coating of hydroxides, and firing the structure to convert the hydroxide coating to an oxide coating of the desired composition and crystalline structure.

    摘要: This invention relates to the manufacture of translucent-totransparent glass-ceramic articles in the BaO-CaO-Al2O3 composition field which are nucleated with ZrO2 and/or V2O5 and/or Ta2O5. Such articles are thermally stable to temperatures up to about 1,400* C., exhibit good dielectric properties, are resistant to attack by alkali metal vapors, and transmit well in the infrared portion of the spectrum.
