摘要: A damping device with a top element, a bottom element, and a viscoelastic element between the top and bottom elements. The damping device exerts significant shear displacement across the viscoelastic element upon deflecting. The damping device may have first and second ends and an intermediate portion between the first and second ends. The damping device may have a generally longitudinal extension with an elevation in the direction of the top element in the intermediate portion. The elevation may have a substantially triangular V-shape when the damping device is unloaded. A system in accordance with the principles of the present invention including a system cabinet, a plurality of carriers mounted in the system cabinet for receiving hard disk drives, and a plurality of damping devices according to the invention mounted between the carriers and the system cabinet. A method of making a damping device including laminating a viscoelastic element between a top element and a bottom element and providing the damping device with a shape by which the damping device exerts significant shear displacement across the viscoelastic element upon deflecting.

摘要: The present invention is a system for direct docking of a storage device/carrier to a back plane of a support frame. The system includes a storage device/carrier including guidance tracks. Guidance rails are connected to the support frame, engage the guidance tracks respectively and guide and support the storage device/carrier into a mating engagement with a connector on a backplane of the support frame. Each guidance rail includes at least one spring element which raises the storage device/carrier away from the support frame as it is inserted thereinto. Further, the storage device/carrier includes opposed, outwardly extending spring elements which bear against the support frame. In operation, the opposed spring elements on the storage device/carrier are compressed as the storage device/carrier is inserted onto the guidance rails and bias the storage device/carrier against the support frame. As the storage device carrier engages with a connector, a reduced cross section region of the guidance tracks engage the sides of the guidance rails, thereby reducing slack between the guidance tracks and the guidance rails.

摘要: An electrical connector including a top clamp plate, two circuit bars, a resilient pressure pad, a bottom clamp plate, and means for fastening two flexible circuits and a third circuit device in mating electrical contact therein is disclosed. Each flexible circuit is mounted on and wrapped about a separate one of the circuit bars with an adhesive to provide a solidly backed sub-assembly. The top clamp plate is then fastened to the sub-assemblies with screws and retaining clips to create a single sub-assembly. The resilient pressure pad is mounted on the bottom clamp plate and the third circuit device is mounted thereon. Each circuit bar is then mounted over the third circuit device to make electrical contact between the third circuit device and each flexible circuit. The components are aligned using pins extending upward from the bottom clamp plate. The single sub-assembly is then fastened to the bottom clamp plate using screws to complete the assembly. In an alternative embodiment, a resilient connector pressure pad having wires extending through and protruding from the thickness thereof is used. The resilient connector pressure pad is located between the flexible circuits and the third circuit device, the wires protruding therefrom actually completing the electrical contact.

摘要: A method for managing extents in a data storage system includes monitoring usage statistics for an extent residing on one or more powered-up storage devices. In the event the extent has not been accessed for specified period of time (as determined from the usage statistics), the method automatically compresses the extent and migrates the extent to an intermediate repository. Once the amount of data in the intermediate repository reaches a specified level, the method migrates the extent from the intermediate repository to one or more normally powered-down storage devices. If I/O is received for the extent while it resides in the normally powered-down storage devices or the intermediate repository, the method automatically migrates the extent from the normally powered-down storage devices or the intermediate repository to the normally powered-up storage devices. A corresponding apparatus and computer program product are also disclosed.
