    摘要: A method for treating a brain tumor includes providing a surgical instrument having an inner member and an outer member. The outer member has a distal region forming a cutting window. The inner member is rotatably received within the outer member, and has a cutting tip that is exposed at the window. The cutting tip and the distal region of the outer member combine to define a cutting implement. An opening is created through the patient's skull to provide access to a brain tumor target site. The cutting implement is delivered through the opening to the target site. The cutting tip is placed into contact with the tumor and operated to cut the tumor. The target site is selectively aspirated to remove cut tumor tissue.

    摘要: A surgical instrument comprises an instrument head and an instrument handle. The instrument head has a proximal end, a distal end, a head static part at the proximal end, a reciprocative part generally at the proximal end, and a moveable distal part at the distal end. The reciprocative part is operatively connected to the moveable distal part so that movement of the reciprocative part between forward and rearward positions causes movement of the moveable distal part between first and second positions. The instrument handle has a handle body attachable to the head static part of the instrument head, a handle plunger configured for reciprocating relative to the handle body generally along the instrument axis, and a lever arm. The handle plunger is operatively engageable with the reciprocative part of the instrument head when the head static part is attached to the handle body. Movement of the handle plunger between forward and rearward positions causes movement of the reciprocative part of the instrument head between its forward and rearward positions. The lever arm is connected to the handle body is engaged and laterally reciprocated by a hand of a surgeon. It is operatively connected to the handle plunger for moving the handle plunger between its forward and rearward positions as the lever arm is moved between inward and outward positions. The instrument handle is configured so that the lateral movement of the lever arm is in a plane spaced below the handle plunger to provide a forward line of sight generally along the instrument axis to the distal end of the instrument head as viewed from behind the handle plunger for permitting the surgeon's hand to reciprocate the lever arm without blocking the line of sight.

    摘要: A device for securing a previously removed cranial plate in position in a cranium to prevent relative movement between opposing bone edges includes a pin containing distal and proximal shanks having ends tapering to a relatively sharp point. One of the shanks is threaded for threadedly engaging the edge of either the cranial plate or the cranium. The shanks are arranged preferably symmetrically about a central collar which has a dimension transverse to the longitudinal axis of the shanks greater than the diameters of the shanks so that the collar forms distal and proximal opposing shoulders for limiting the insertion depth of the pin. A nut is located adjacent the collar or formed as part of the perimeter of the collar to facilitate rotation of the pin to screw in the threaded shank.
