摘要： A process for the extraction and isolation of concentrated carnosic acid from plant matter of the Labiatae family including contacting the plant matter with a water-miscible solvent to form a plant extract and adjusting the pH of the plant extract to a level between 7 and 10 while adding water in an amount sufficient to cause precipitation of impurities while retaining the carnosic acid salt in solution. The impurities are separated and the remaining aqueous solution is acidified to precipitate a highly purified carnosic acid product which is essentially odorless, flavorless and colorless.

摘要： Provided are processes for the preparation of compositions enriched in phenolic compounds from a crude plant extract. One process includes a novel column purification step using a polymer resin that releasably adsorbs the phenolic compounds but does not retain polar non-phenolic compounds, wherein the resin comprises aromatic rings substituted with one or more electron-withdrawing groups. This invention also includes compositions enriched in phenolic compounds. This invention encompasses methods of using the phenolic-enriched compositions for treating warm-blooded animals, including humans, infected with paramyxovaridae such as respiratory syncytial virus, orthomyoxovaridae such as influenza A, B, and C, parainfluenza, Herpes viruses such as HSV-1 and HSV-2, and Flaviviruses such as West Nile Virus, and for treating inflammation such as caused by arthritis, stress and digestive disease. The compositions are also useful as meat additives to inhibit food-borne pathogens.

摘要： The present invention relates to a naturally obtained mixture of higher molecular weight primary aliphatic alcohols which contain 20 to 34 carbon atoms. This invention also relates to the process for obtaining the alcohol mixture by extraction and purification with organic solvents from a natural product, such as beeswax with and without saponification of the natural product. The alcohol mixture obtained from beeswax has enhanced purity and contains a mixture of alcohols having 20, 22, 24, 26, 27, 28, 30, 32 and 34 carbon atoms. The alcohol mixture is useful in pharmaceutical compositions, foodstuffs and dietary supplements and is effective for lowering cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol and increasing HDL-cholesterol levels so that it is effective in treating hypercholesterolemia. Consequently the composition may be used to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, to inhibit the atherosclerotic process (platelet hyperaggregability, ischemia and thrombosis) and also to act as an anti-inflammatory and anti-thrombotic agent. The composition also possesses neurotrophic properties and is useful for improving male sexual activity.
