摘要: An enhanced, flooding-based link state routing protocol is described that provides pruning of link state data and, when needed, rate-controlled refresh of the pruned link state data from other routers of the flooding domain. A routing device comprises a network interface to send and receive packets over a layer-two (L2) communication medium. The routing device includes a control unit coupled to the network interface, and a flooding-based link state routing protocol executing on a processor of the control unit. The link-state routing protocol establishes an adjacency with a peer router. A database of the routing device includes entries that store a plurality of link state messages for a flooding domain of the link state routing protocol, wherein at least one of the entries in the database stores a partial link state message having a header portion and a payload having pruned link state data.

摘要: An enhanced, flooding-based routing protocol is described that provides burst-rate and average-rate flow control. A routing device comprises a network interfaces configured to send and receive packets over a layer-two (L2) communication medium. A flooding-based link state routing protocol executes on a processor of the routing device to maintain network topology information for a network and establish an adjacency with a peer router over the layer-two (L2) communication medium. A database of the routing device stores a minimum packet interval and a credit specified by the peer router for the adjacency. When sufficient credit has been allocated to the L2 communication medium, a scheduler of the router dequeues link state messages from an outbound packet queue and floods each of the link state messages to the L2 communication medium while maintaining at least the specified minimum packet interval between each of the plurality of link state messages.

摘要: A software module operating within a router, such as an operating system, manages state information within a hierarchically ordered and temporally-linked data structure. The software module sends state change messages to other software modules within the router, referred to as consumers, in an order that corresponds to the hierarchical order and the temporal linking. The data structure may comprise a plurality of objects to store state information. The operating system may receive event messages that indicate a change to the state information. The objects may be hierarchically linked in accordance with a hierarchy representing relationships of event messages. The objects may be temporally linked in accordance with the order in which the operating system receives event messages. The operating system may traverse the data structure according to the temporal and hierarchical links to select state change messages to send to a consumer.

摘要: A method and system for providing enhanced services for a network. The enhanced services use information about the network which is available to a subnet of communicating processors (such as a set of routers), collectively executing a common distributed technique for disseminating that network information. The router subnet collects network topology information and provides a service using that network topology information, responsive to requests from non-routers coupled to the network (such as a set of host processors). The router subnet also collects information advertised by hosts coupled to the network, and disseminates that host information to substantially all routers, using the common distributed technique for disseminating network topology information. The host information may comprise information about server processes available at the originating host (such as what services are available and to which users those services are available), or may comprise information about client processes operating at the originating host (such as which users are operating those client processes and which services they desire).

摘要: The invention is directed to techniques for failsafe management of periodic communications between network devices. A first network device, for example, establishes with a second network device a first response interval by which the first device responds to a message received from the second device. Prior to commencing a software upgrade, the first device determines whether the event requires an interval of time during which the first device cannot respond to the message within the established first response interval. Based on the determination and prior to commencing the upgrade, the first device establishes with the second device a second response interval that equals or exceeds the first response interval. Upon completion of the event, the first device establishes with the second device a third response interval. The first network device therefore may automatically adjust response intervals to accommodate upgrades that may cause unnecessary thrashing.
