摘要: In a network of workstations implementing a grid for sharing workstation resources while maintaining local workstation workloads, grid workloads are assigned to workstations depending on how busy they are with the local workload. CPU utilization is monitored at each workstation and grid workload is only accepted if it can be handled without impacting the interactive performance of the workstation and in alignment with the workstation user's preferences. Also, grid workloads may be categorized by the extent to which they tie up workstation resources and this categorization used as further input to the grid workload assignment process.

摘要: A phase-change memory (PCM) includes a matrix of storage cells, including at least a first group with at least one cell. Each cell includes a phase change material having at least a first resistance value and a second resistance value, such that the first group can have an identical message encoded therein in at least a first way and a second way. The memory also includes a controller configured to encode the identical message in the at least first group the first or second way, based on which way causes the least amount of writing cost, given current levels of the group. Another embodiment of memory includes a matrix of storage cells, including at least a first group with at least one cell. Each of the storage cells has at least two levels, such that each of the storage cells can have an identical message encoded therein in at least a first way and a second way (the cells can be PCM or another technology). Each one of the storage cells is arbitrarily individually changeable among the at least two levels, and each of the cells is cost-asymmetric. A controller encodes the identical message in the at least first group using the first way or the second way, based on which way incurs a least cost when writing the message into the at least one cell of the at least first group, given current levels of the at least first group.

摘要: A computer system includes a security subsystem which is able to trustfully track which files or storage areas of a storage device have been altered since a last virus scan. The trusted information can then be used to accelerate scans for undesirable code or data such as viruses and invalid or corrupt registry entries. In the case of viruses, files or storage areas which have been altered are scanned against a super-set of virus definitions. Unaltered files or storage areas are scanned against a subset of virus definitions.

摘要: An orthopedic fixator for positioning a first element relative to a second element with precision and with controlled compliance which can be adjusted during the healing process. One embodiment comprises a first frame for attachment to the first element, a second frame attached to the first frame through a plurality of adjustable effective length struts, and a third frame for attachment to the second element, wherein the third frame is compliantly attached to the second frame. A preferred embodiment comprises adjustable length preload elements to apply unidirectional forces between the first and second frames so as preload the adjustable effective length struts and substantially reduce the positional tolerance. An alternative embodiment comprises adjustable spring elements allowing the compliance of the attachment of the third frame to the second frame to be adjusted at various points in the healing process.

摘要: A flexibly interfaceable portable computing device includes a display coupled to a processor, which is coupled or selectively coupled to either or both of a keyboard and a recording unit. The display and the keyboard provide a first user interface to the processor. The recording unit is superimposable with a removable markable surface. A stylus allows user marking on the markable surface. The stylus provides a stroke signal and a stroke mark. The recording unit, the markable surface, and the stylus provide a second user interface to the processor. Optionally, the display also contributes to providing the second user interface to the processor. Switching among viewing modes for the display, and synchronization of information between the processor and a processor of the recording unit are also provided. A casing can enfold the display, the keyboard, and the recording unit to form a relatively slim profile. A portable computer system can have a display, a keyboard, and thick components enfolded and/or located within an overall thickness substantially equal to a sum of a first thickness for the display plus a second thickness for the keyboard, to present a slim profile.
