摘要: A folded-path optical component usable as an ocular lens in a near-eye display is disclosed. The folded-path optical component includes a cavity formed by a pair of spaced apart coaxial curved reflective polarizers, and a partial reflector in the cavity for splitting an impinging light beam to propagate along two optical paths ending at an exit pupil of the optical component. Each optical path includes a reflection from one of the reflective polarizers and a transmission through the other one of the reflective polarizers.

摘要: A telecentric optical element that has a first surface, a second surface, and a layer of optically anisotropic material between the first surface and the second surface. The telecentric optical element is configured to receive light on the first surface, the light having propagated from a location within a predetermined distance range from the first surface of the optical element. The telecentric optical element is also configured to redirect a first portion of the light, having a first polarization, off the first surface of the telecentric optical element in an off-axis direction, and to transmit a second portion of light, having polarization different from the first polarization, to the second surface. An eye-tracking assembly that includes the telecentric optical element and a display device that includes the telecentric optical element are also disclosed.

摘要: An optical assembly includes a first optical waveguide, a first in-coupler coupled with the first optical waveguide and a projector configured to project image light toward a first side of the first optical waveguide. The optical assembly also includes a first scanning reflector optically coupled with the projector and disposed on a second side of the first optical waveguide that is opposite to the first side. The projector is configured to project image light. The first scanning reflector is configured to receive the image light and to redirect the image light across a first range of directions. The first in-coupler is configured to redirect a first portion of the image light so that the first portion of the image light undergoes total internal reflection inside the first optical waveguide.

摘要: A method includes obtaining a first optical assembly including a first optical element and a first flexible membrane. The first optical element has a first optical element surface and a second optical element surface that is opposite to the first optical element surface. The first flexible membrane has a first membrane surface and a second membrane surface that is opposite to the first membrane surface. The first optical element is a geometric phase optical element or a polarization volume hologram optical element. The second optical element surface of the first optical element is coupled with at least a first portion of the first membrane surface of the first flexible membrane. The method also includes coupling the first optical element with the first flexible membrane attached thereto to a target substrate. Also disclosed is an optical assembly comprising the first optical element and the first flexible membrane.

摘要: A display device includes a relay waveguide and a scanner. The scanner is configured to angularly scan image light for coupling into the waveguide, and includes a scanning reflector and a second reflector disposed between the scanning reflector and an input coupler of the waveguide. The scanning reflector has an aperture for the image light to propagate therethrough toward the second reflector. The second reflector is configured to reflect at least a portion of the image light received through the aperture back toward the scanning reflector and to transmit at least a portion of the image light reflected from the scanning reflector toward the input coupler. The arrangement enables a compact design of the display.

摘要: A beam scanner for a near-eye display includes a beam-folded pupil relay configured for receiving a light beam reflected from a tiltable reflector and relaying the light beam to an exit pupil while preserving the beam angle of the reflected beam. The beam-folding pupil relay includes a beamsplitter, e.g. a polarization beam splitter configured to redirect the beam to a curved reflector, which sends the beam towards the exit pupil. Polarization of the light beam reflected from the curved reflector may be changed to an orthogonal polarization by a waveplate disposed in an optical path of the light beam between the polarization beam splitter and the curved reflector, enabling the reflected light beam to propagate through the polarization beam splitter towards the exit pupil. A pupil-replicating waveguide may be disposed proximate the exit pupil. A 2D tiltable reflector or a pair of 1D tiltable reflectors may be used.

摘要: An optical assembly for projecting light from a display includes a first optical waveguide, a reflective optical element configured, and a first in-coupler. The reflective optical element is configured to receive first light having first polarization from the display and to reflect the first light as second light having second polarization distinct from the first polarization. The first in-coupler is coupled with the first optical waveguide. The first in-coupler is configured to receive and transmit the first light. The first in-coupler is further configured to receive the second light and redirect a first portion of the second light so that the first portion of the second light undergoes total internal reflection inside the first optical waveguide.
