The present invention provides an improvement in circuit switching for a network comprising a switching apparatus including a plurality of transceivers for interfacing directly with a like plurality of nodes. Each of the transceivers has a receive and transmit through port for passing data to and from nodes. Transmitted data includes a connect/disconnect sequence, a first wait sequence, and user data. The switching apparatus further includes circuitry for isolating each transceiver so as to loop back data when not in use and a switching matrix for directly connecting any pair of transceivers. Each of the transceivers includes circuitry for detecting a connect and disconnect sequence and an interface for connection to a serial asynchronous receiver to derive node requests, routing data, priority and other information from the connect sequence detected at the transceiver. Derived switch configuration requests are processed by a node route control state machine, with each node route control state machine integrated in a bus architecture for configuring the matrix switch. A bus arbitration state machine controls the bus architecture servicing bus requests and providing bus grants for the transfer of routing information to switch control logic and a command sequencer. The requesting node may set a priority for a connection request, queue a connection request or alternatively request data from the switch controller micro-controller core.

A dual optical fiber transceiver, for use with first and second optical fibers, includes a laser transmitter for transmitting laser light into the first optical fiber, a laser light receiver for receiving laser light from the second optical fiber, and a controller coupled to the laser transmitter and laser light receiver. The controller includes a multi-protocol state machine for establishing the full duplex connection whenever the other device operates in compliance with either (A) a predefined "on-off-on" signaling protocol for establishing full duplex connections, or (B) a second predefined signaling protocol for establishing full duplex connections. In a preferred embodiment, the predefined "on-off-on" signaling protocol is the Open Fiber Control (OFC) protocol and the second predefined signaling protocol is a standard "laser transmitter always on" protocol. In the preferred embodiment, the multi-protocol state machine disables operation of the laser transmitter whenever a loss of light condition is detected by the transceiver's laser light receiver that is not in compliance with the OFC protocol.

The receiver receives an optical data signal from the transmitter and recovers therefrom a digital data stream and an associated first clock having an associated first clock rate. The data stream is stored in a memory device at the first clock rate. A clock generator generates a second clock having an associated second clock rate that is adjusted in accordance with a clock control signal. A control circuit reads data from the memory device at a rate corresponding to the second clock rate and generates a fullness signal that indicates whether the memory device is fuller more full than a predefined threshold fullness level. A clock speed adjusting circuit generates the clock control signal in accordance with the fullness signal.

In order to control the transfer of packets of information among a plurality of stations, e.g., digital computers, the instant communications system, station and protocol contemplate first and second oppositely directed signal paths. At least two stations are coupled to both the first and the second signal paths. A station includes arrangements for reading (and writing) signals from (and on) each of the two paths. Signals are read from either path by an arrangement which electrically precedes the arrangement for writing signals on the path. If the station has a packet to transmit, it can overwrite a busy control field of a packet on either path. Also having read a packet signal from the path, a logical interpretation may be made within the station as to whether the path is busy or is not busy. If the path is not busy, the packet may be written on the path by overwriting any signal thereon. If the path is busy, the station may defer the writing until the path is detected as not busy e.g. by reading a busy control field of another packet. Here the two paths are coupled to form two ring structures so the packets flow down the path to a destination station. Eventually all packets will be transmitted and the busy control field loops around to a station which is designated as a control station. The control station, responsive to detecting that all packets have been transmitted on one of the paths, may transmit a start cycle packet on the one path, responsive to which event a new cycle may be started by initializing each station on the one path and by permitting each initialized station to transmit. In the event of an electrical open, the system, station and protocol are adapted to reconfigure the system so that the station electrically preceding the open functions as an end station while the station electrically succeeding the open functions as a head station.
