摘要: A system for determining the cumulative position and periodic average velocity of a rotating body having an incremental encoder, operatively connected to the body, for generating a series of periodic signals indicative of rotation of the body. The system also includes a high frequency clock for generating clock pulses at a frequency greater than the maximum frequency of the encoder signal, and a timer for controlling the total time of a predetermined sample interval. Also included in the device is a counter for accumulating the number of integral encoder signal cycles that have been completed, an arithmetic logic unit for determining the size of a fractional portion of an encoder signal cycle that was completed between the last integral encoder cycle and the end of the sample interval. Subsequently, the number of integral encoder signal cycles is added to the fractional portion of an encoder cycle to determine the total number of encoder signal cycles completed, whereby the total is then multiplied by an encoder position conversion factor to determine the cumulative position of the rotating body or belt driven therefrom.

摘要: A method to provide a highly intelligent, automated diagnostic system that identifies the need to replace specific parts to minimize machine downtime rather than require extensive service troubleshooting. In particular, a systematic, logical test analysis scheme to assess machine operation from a simple sensor system and to be able to pinpoint parts and components needing replacement is provided by a series of first level of tests by the control to monitor components for receiving a first level of data and by a series of second level of tests by the control to monitor components for receiving a second level of data. Each of the first level tests and first level data is capable of identifying a first level of part failure independent of any other test. Each of the second level tests and second level data is a combination of first level tests and first level data or a combination of a first level test and first level data and a third level test and third level data. The second level tests and second level data are capable of identifying second and third levels of part failure. Codes are stored and displayed to manifest specific part failures.

摘要: A method and apparatus to determine the use status of a customer replaceable unit (CRU) in an electrophotographic printing machine. The CRU has a customer replaceable unit monitor (CRUM) which communicates with the machine controller upon insertion of the CRU into the machine. Based on the signal generated by the CRUM the controller can determine whether the CRU has been previously used in the machine or is new. Appropriate settings and adjustments can be made based on predetermined parameters according to use. In addition, if a CRU is new a cycle can be initiated in which a toner patch is developed and not transferred so that a layer of toner is deposited on the cleaning blade. This minimizes damage to a photoreceptor belt due to lack of lubrication of the cleaner blade and chatter that may result therefrom.

摘要: A method and apparatus for reproducing high quality images using an electrophotographic printing machine is disclosed. More specifically, the present invention is used to change the location, shape and size of a process control patch. Process control patches may be used to improve the quality of an image prior to printing. The intensity of light reflected from the control patch is measured, and the measurements are used to change parameters such as magnitude of electrostatic charge, and toner concentration, before the latent image developed. Adjusting these parameters at this time will allow the printing apparatus to reproduce images having superior quality than previously available.

摘要: A adaptive process control apparatus for controlling a plurality of image parameters in an electrophotographic printing machine is disclosed. A toner area coverage sensor detects value of density values for a composite toner image representing a toner reproduction curve and generates a plurality of corresponding signals. A toner concentration sensor detects a level of toner concentration and generates a corresponding signal. The signals from both sensors are conveyed to a linear quadratic controller and compared to target image parameters, wherein control signals are generated based upon the difference between the two sets of inputs. An identifier also receives the signals generated by the sensors, along with the control signals corresponding to the difference between the two sets of inputs. The identifier then modifies the target images to compensate for changes in image quality due to material aging or environmental changes.
