A vertical internal broaching machine includes a workpiece holder mounted on a machining table of the broaching machine. A vertically displaceable broaching slide is mounted beneath the machining table which slide draws a broach through a workpiece at the workpiece holder. A vertically displaceable broach feed slide is mounted above the workpiece holder, and an inclined feed channel for the workpieces terminates in front of and above the workpiece holder. A mask extends up to one end of the feed channel and is swivelable from the plane of the feed channel to the workpiece holder by means of a swiveling drive means. An ejection chute extends from the mask. A separating means is mounted above the feed channel for releasing workpieces to the mask when the mask is in the raised position. A stop mounted on the broaching slide associated with the workpiece holder projects between the mask and the ejection chute when the broaching slide is in the raised position and releases the mask when the broaching slide is in the lowered position.

A scanning finger which can be moved approximately vertically relative to the scanning device is provided for ascertaining the position of a particular tooth and is coupled with at least one member which emits displacement-dependent signals for triggering drive mechanisms for the machine slides. In order to enable a substantially arbitrary, yet precise, guidance of the scanning finger in order to ascertain dimensions which are of importance for the geometry of the tool, the scanning finger is attached on one of two slides which are displaceable at right angles relative to one another and a displacement pickup is associated with each slide for detecting the displacement distance from a position of rest traveled by respective slide.

The scanning finger has a scanning face, which is substantially horizontal and limited by and undercut to rest on the free face of a tool tooth to be ground, as well as a face which is downwardly offset from the scanning face and is intended for ascertaining the cutting face of the tooth. In order to make it possible to scan the cutting face at a distance from the original cutting edge, the face for ascertaining the cutting face of the tooth is undercut in the direction of movement of the horizontal slide and below the horizontal scanning face, and below the undercut it has a measuring edge to rest on the cutting face.

A workpiece holder for a vertical broaching machine for broaching annular workpieces is provided with at least two centering pieces for radial immobilization of the workpieces. The centering pieces are radially pressable against an annular surface of the workpiece by a common drive means. The centering pieces are displaced until they rest firmly against the radial surface of the workpiece, thus ensuring that diametrical tolerances of the workpiece are completely eliminated.
