An efficient scroll type compressor is disclosed which has a large number of spiral turns, yet yields gradual, controlled compression. The compressor includes a housing, a fixed scroll and an orbiting scroll. The fixed scroll is fixedly disposed relative to the housing and has a circular end plate from which a first spiral wrap extends. The orbiting scroll has a circular end plate from which a second spiral wrap extends. The spiral wraps interfit at an angular and a radial offset to make a plurality of line contacts to define at least one pair of sealed off fluid pockets. The fluid pockets move toward the center of the spiral wraps with consequent reduction of their volume by the orbital motion of the orbiting scroll. The spiral wrap of each scroll has a transition portion between a higher inner portion of the spiral, and a lower outer portion thereof. The circular end plate of each scroll is provided with a stepped portion between a deeper inner portion of the end plate and a shallower outer portion thereof. The opposed transition and stepped portions are in registry, so that the higher spiral portions engage the deeper end plate portions, and the shorter spiral portions engage the shallower end plate portions.

A scroll type compressor is disclosed. The compressor includes a housing having a fluid inlet port and an outlet port. A fixed scroll is fixed within the housing and has a circular end plate from which a first wrap extends. The end plate of the fixed scroll partitions the inner chamber of the housing into a front chamber connected to the fluid inlet port and a rear chamber. The rear chamber is divided into a central chamber connected to the fluid outlet port and an outer chamber. An orbiting scroll, which is disposed in the front chamber, also has a circular end plate from which a second wrap extends. Both wraps interfit at angular and radial offsets to form a plurality of line contacts to define at least one pair of sealed off fluid pockets. The end plate of the fixed scroll has at least two holes which are placed at symmetrical position and connect the fluid pockets to the outer chamber. The end plate also has a communicating hole which connects the first chamber and the outer chamber. Valve members are disposed in the outer chamber for opening and closing each hole. A control mechanism which is disposed in the outer chamber controls the operation of the valve members.

A lubricating mechanism for a scroll-type fluid displacement apparatus is disclosed. A driving mechanism for an orbiting scroll comprises a drive shaft and a drive pin projecting at an eccentric location from an inner end surface of the drive shaft. An annular boss projecting from a circular end plate of the orbiting scroll receives the drive pin. Therefore, the orbiting scroll is rotatably supported on the drive pin. The lubricating mechanism includes an oil passageway formed in the circular end plate of the orbiting scroll to communicate between the interior of the boss and one of the fluid packets located at the outer peripheral portion of the spiral elements. Lubricating oil thus flows into the interior of the boss and lubricates the bearing and other contact surface disposed in the center portion of the apparatus.

The fuel vapor treatment system is further equipped with an atmospheric pressure setting device that sets the value detected by the sensor when the drain cut valve is open as the atmospheric pressure used for controlling the engine.

An apparatus for use with an internal combustion engine having a fuel vapor trap from which fuel vapor is purged into the engine through a purge passage having a purge control valve provided therein. The purge control valve is controlled to permit fuel vapor purge through the purge passage based on the existing engine operating conditions. An air/fuel ratio feedback control correction factor is calculated to correct the air/fuel ratio within a predetermined range based on the air/fuel ratio of the mixture supplied to the engine. A gain value is calculated based on a deviation between the air/fuel ratio feedback correction factor calculated with the fuel vapor purge and the air/fuel ratio feedback correction factor calculated without the fuel vapor purge and a purge rate of the fuel vapor flow rate to the intake air flow rate. The calculated gain values are stored in a memory in respective memory locations addressable by different fuel vapor amounts. The calculated gain value is stored in the memory in a memory location corresponding to the sensed fuel vapor amount to update a gain value stored previously in the memory location. A gain value is read from the memory location corresponding to the fuel vapor amount. The amount of fuel supplied to the engine is controlled according to a target value calculated based on the read gain value and the engine operating conditions.

A rotary machine, such as a horizontally oriented scroll type refrigerant compressor is disclosed. The compressor includes a compressor housing, an inner block fixedly disposed within the compressor housing, a drive shaft extending substantially in the horizontal direction, and a driven mechanism, such as a compression mechanism operatively connected to one end of the drive shaft. The drive shaft is rotatably supported by the inner block and the compressor housing. A shielding element, such as an annular cylindrical member is fixedly held between the inner block and the compressor housing to prevent the drive shaft from passing through an oil sump of the housing. An internal lubrication oil pump is formed by the elements which are associated with the drive shaft, and is operated by virtue of the rotational motion of the drive shaft in order to supply the lubrication oil from the oil sump to the frictional surfaces of the internal component parts of the compressor. According to the construction and operational manner of the oil pump, the oil pump can be used for various types of horizontally oriented rotary machines. The drive shaft can also rotate without receiving oil viscous drag.
