An intermittent coating apparatus for intermittently coating a continuously running base member with a coating material includes a nozzle for discharging the coating material toward the base member and an absorption unit for controlling a flow of the coating material. The nozzle has a slit opened toward the base member and a manifold connected to the slit. The absorption unit includes a head having an inlet, an outlet, and a passage connecting the inlet and the outlet. The head is located in a housing. The absorption unit also includes a driving unit for sliding the head in the direction of a shaft located in the housing. By the sliding operation of the head, an absorption space is formed between an end face of the head and the manifold. In order to stop the coating operation, the supply of the coating material from an external supply opening to the inlet of the head is stopped by the sliding movement of the head. The sliding movement of the head also causes the coating material remaining in the nozzle to be absorbed into the absorption space. As a result, there is no coating material remaining between the nozzle and a roller provided for causing the base member to run. Accordingly, the coating material is not pulled out to the base member when the supply of the coating is stopped, and thus the leading edge and the trailing edge of coated areas of the base member can be straight lines.

The film of the cleaner is wedged between locking portions of the cassette in order to cause the cleaner to bow in a direction away from the guide roller such that the nonwoven cloth of the cleaner is biased under a low force against the magnetic surface of the tape. Accordingly, foreign matter on the surface of the magnetic tape is removed.

When in use a highly luminous automobile discharge lamp will experience a temperature rise to about 700.degree. C. at the lamp glass surface. As such, the light-screening film formed on the lamp will also be exposed to a temperature of 700.degree. C.; the temperature of the glass surface of a lamp rises and, accordingly, that of the light-screening film formed thereon also rises. Especially with a highly luminous automobile discharge lamp, the temperature of the lamp glass surface rises to about 700.degree. C. during the lighting. Necessarily, the light-screening film on the glass surface is also exposed to a temperature of 700.degree. C. As such, a light-screening film material free of discoloration or peeling even after exposure to a temperature of 700.degree. C. has been desired. There is disclosed a light-screening film paint for lamps containing (1) at least one compound of either manganese oxide or an iron oxide compound doped with a metallic manganese and having the formula (Fe.sub.x Mn.sub.1-x).sub.2 O.sub.3 where 0.95>x>0.70; and (2) powder glass containing at least one of silica, zinc oxide, boron oxide and aluminum oxide. A light-screening film is produced by applying the paint to the surface of a lamp, followed by the firing at a temperature of not higher than 1,200.degree. C.

A tape cassette for accommodating a reeled length of magnetic recording tape comprises a generally rectangular flattened box-like configuration. The cassette has top and bottom panels, front and rear wall and a pair of side walls. The front wall has a head access window and a pair of pinch roller access windows all defined therein. While a portion of the length of magnetic tape extends in the vicinity of and parallel to the front wall, tape cleaners are secured to front wall portions defined between the head access window and the pinch roller access windows so as to slidingly contact that portion of the length of magnetic recording tape as the latter is transported from one reel to the other reel. Each tape cleaner may be a fiber-intertwined cleaning member made of non-woven fabric or a fiber-tufted cleaning member made of crimped or curled fibers closely planted on a backing. With the fiber-intertwined cleaning members, that portion of the length of magnetic recording tape that is held in sliding contact with an intermediate portion of each fiber-intertwined cleaning member is rearwardly biased a predetermined bias distance within the range of 0.5 to 1 mm. With the fiber-tufted cleaning members, that portion of the length of magnetic recording tape that is held in sliding contact with an intermediate portion of each fiber-intertwined cleaning member is rearwardly biased a predetermined bias distance within the range of 0.1 to 1 mm.
