Spindles and the like, treating.-Crank-shafts and crank-pins are ground by means of two grinding-wheels a, b carried by an arm e pivoted at f to a fixed support, the wheels being driven by pulleys c, d the axial length of which, as shown in Fig. 3, is such that the outer face of a pulley does not project beyond the outer face of the grinding-wheel driven by the other pulley. The pulleys are driven from a pulley k by a belt or cord i which passes round a guide-roller n and over an obliquely-placed pulley o, which may be adjustable to tension the belt. The mounting of the grinding-wheels and pulleys on the arm e is shown in Fig. 4, a flanged disc p having a central pin journaled in the arm forming the support for the wheel and also one face of the pulley, a ring q forming the other face. The wheels are brought into operation successively by movement of the arm about its pivot by a, screw g, or by cams &c. The wheels a, b may be mounted obliquely on the arm. The apparatus may be mounted on a lathe or may form an independent machine. In a modification, the crank-shaft is stationary, and the mechanism rotates about the shaft.
