An image forming method comprises a step of reacting an ink containing a coloring material with a liquid composition containing fine particles reactive to the coloring material on a recording medium, where the reaction between the coloring material and the fine particles occurs in a liquid, the coloring material is adsorbed on the surfaces of the fine particles while keeping the monomolecular state as in the ink, and the fine particles having the coloring material on the surface aggregate each other. This method can provide images of high optical density and high color saturation, with less occurrence of white stripes in the image.

This invention relates to an ink set which can form a colored area on a recording medium with a broad color reproduction range, excellent uniformity of the colors, with effective prevention of bleeding at the boundary between adjacent different color areas on a recording medium, and high rub-off resistance of the colored area. The ink set has separately an aqueous anionic or cationic ink containing a coloring material, and a liquid composition containing fine particles dispersed therein and electrically charged at the surface in a polarity opposite to the ink. The apparatus calculates a variation time count in the image area from the signal values of the pixels included in the image area. The apparatus calculates adjusting levels Fz1, Fz2, and Fe from the variation time count and the variation using a definition unit which defines correspondence among the variation time count, the variation, and the adjusting levels, and applies an adjusting process to a signal value of the pixel to be processed by the calculated adjusting levels. Note that the definition unit defines the correspondence so that the adjusting levels Fz1, Fz2, and Fe progressively change in accordance with different variation time counts or different variations.

In a correction processing that corrects a color deviation caused by output characteristic variations among print heads of a printing apparatus, the printing apparatus prints a test pattern that allows accurate detection of the color deviation by a visual check. More specifically, each of the patches in the test pattern is made up of two areas placed adjacent to each other. One of the two areas (upper area) is used as a test area for detecting the degree of the color deviation. Of the gradation values of C, M and Y, which make up the patch print data, the gradation values of C and M are changed among the patches making up the test pattern. The other area is used as a reference area printed with an achromatic color that represents a reference gradation value for the deviation detection. The gradation values of C, M, Y and K are determined so that a spatial frequency of dots formed in the reference area of each patch is close to the spatial frequency of the associated test area.

Image data, or RGB luminance data input from a host computer, is color-converted by LUT into 8-bit CMYK density data for each ink color. The CMYK density data is divided into predetermined regions and, based on a gray scale value for each of the divided regions, ink application volumes are calculated. According to the calculated ink application volumes, the 8-bit processing liquid application data S is generated. Then, the CMYK density data and the processing liquid application data undergo output gamma processing, after which they are quantized by a quantization processing unit into 1-bit ejection data for each nozzle.
