    摘要: In a spark plug having a precious metal tip joined to the front end portion of a ground electrode, the stable junction state of the precious metal tip is guaranteed for a long time. A precious metal tip 32 on the side of a ground electrode 27 is not directly joined to the front end portion of the ground electrode 27 but indirectly joined with a mounting part 51 interposed therebetween. The mounting part 51 includes a base part 53 which has a disc shape and is provided with a flange part 52 on its outer periphery and a protruding part 54 which protrudes from the base part 53 and has a columnar shape. First, in the state where the precious metal tip 32 is in contact with the protruding part 54 of the mounting part 51, laser welding or the like is performed thereon to form a fused part 42 and obtain a complex, and the base part 53 of the mounting part 51 is joined to a flat surface of the ground electrode 27 by resistance welding. The grain size of the grains of the mounting part 51 in the vicinity of the fused part 42 is smaller than the grain size of the grains thereof in the vicinity of the ground electrode 27, and the grain size of the grains of the flange part 52 of the mounting part 51 is smaller than the grain size of the grains of the protruding part 54.

The mounting part includes a base part and a protruding part. First, in the state where the precious metal tip is in contact with the protruding part, laser welding or the like is performed thereon to form a fused part and obtain a complex, and the base part is joined to a flat surface of the ground electrode by resistance welding. The grain size of grains of the mounting part in the vicinity of the of the fused part is greater than the grain size of the grain size of the grains thereof in the vicinity of the ground electrode, and the grain size of the grains of the flange part of the mounting part is smaller than the grain size of the grains of the protruding part.

    摘要: A spark plug including a center electrode; an insulator; a metallic shell; and a ground electrode, wherein at least one of the center electrode and the ground electrode has thereon an intermediate member which connects the center electrode or the ground electrode to a noble metal tip. The intermediate member has a tip-bonding portion to which the noble metal tip is bonded, and an electrode-bonding portion which has a diameter greater than that of the tip-bonding portion, and which is bonded to the center electrode or the ground electrode. The intermediate member contains nickel (Ni) as a main component, and also contains chromium (Cr) in an amount of 15 to 25 wt. %. The intermediate member contains, in a surface portion thereof, silicon (Si) in an amount per unit volume of 0.04 mg/mm3 to 0.12 mg/mm3, and aluminum (Al) in an amount per unit volume of 0.03 mg/mm3 to 0.10 mg/mm3.

    摘要: A method of manufacturing a spark plug wherein a tip having a burr-free surface is more reliably welded to a ground electrode, to thereby realize an excellent joint strength. The spark plug includes a center electrode, a ground electrode, and a ground-electrode-side tip joined to the ground electrode through its joining surface. The method of manufacturing includes a tip forming step and a tip joining step of resistance-welding the ground-electrode-side tip to the ground electrode. A wire rod having a reference surface is formed, and the wire rod is cut by moving a cutting blade from one edge of the reference surface with respect to the width direction thereof toward the other edge of the reference surface with respect to the width direction, thereby obtaining the ground-electrode-side tip. At least a portion of the reference surface is joined to the ground electrode, whereby that portion becomes the joining surface.
