It has been found that aqueous coating compositions comprising a blocked organic polyisocyanate and quaternary sulfonium group-containing resin containing isocyanate reactive groups can be electrodeposited. These compositions deposit on the cathode to provide coatings having excellent properties including solvent resistance, salt spray and detergent resistance, hardness, flexibility, and most importantly a resistance to yellowing, especially when used to formulate white or pastel coatings.

An improved process for the preparation of cationic resins derived from polyepoxides is disclosed. Typically, the process comprises contacting the polyepoxide with particular polyether polyols and heating the two together to form a resin which may then be reacted with a cationic base group former such as an amine and acid. Aqueous dispersions of the cationic resins prepared by the improved process are useful for coating applications, particularly cationic electrodeposition. They exhibit good low temperature cure response and the cured coatings have good physical properties such as resistance to water, detergent and salt spray corrosion.

Resins containing epoxy groups and quaternary ammonium groups can be prepared by reacting an epoxy group-containing material and an amine acid salt. Boron is added to the composition either by adding a member selected from the group consisting of aqueous boric acid solution, boric acid, and compounds hydrolyzable to form boric acid in aqueous medium to the reaction product or by utilizing a material selected from the group consisting of amine salts of boric acid and amino-containing esters of boric acid as the amine salt constituent. It has now been found that when the reaction between the amine acid salt and the epoxy is conducted in the presence of a controlled amount of water, more uniform and desirable products can be obtained.

Articles coated with a resinous composition which is deposited from an aqueous dispersion comprising a quaternary ammonium base-containing polymer are disclosed. Also disclosed are thermosetting water-dispersible resinous compositions comprising the quaternary ammonium base group-containing polymers in combination with curing agents. Aqueous dispersions of the polymers are useful in coating applications such as cationic electrodeposition. The aqueous dispersions are also useful in conventional coating applications such as flow, dip, spray and roll coating.
