[Object] To provide a modified hydrophilic polyrotaxane which is soluble in water or a water-like solvent, a cross-linked polyrotaxane using this, and a solvent for dissolving the modified hydrophilic polyrotaxane. [Solving Means] A modified hydrophilic polyrotaxane has a cyclic molecule, a linear molecule including the cyclic molecule with piercing through the cyclic molecule, and blocking groups which are placed at both end terminals of the linear molecule to prevent the cyclic molecule from leaving from the linear molecule. The cyclic molecule is cyclodextrin, and each of all or a part of the hydroxyl groups in the cyclodextrin is modified with a hydrophilic modification group. A cross-linked polyrotaxane is formed by combining this modified hydrophilic polyrotaxane and a polymer through the cyclic molecule.A solvent for dissolving this modified hydrophilic polyrotaxane contains at least one of water and a water-like solvent.

It is an object of the invention to provide a clear coating composition, which can give coating films showing good water repellency, in other words a factor giving a care-free and deluxe feeling to car owners, and which are excellent in non-sanding recoating dirtied coatings after due repair, as well as a method of forming a coating film and a multilayered coating film. The invention provides a clear coating composition which comprises (A) 100 parts by mass of the sum of a crosslinkable coating film-forming resin and a crosslinking agent on a solid basis and (B) 0.01 to 2 parts by mass of a ladder silicone copolymer obtainable by copolymerizing (b-1) a (meth)acryloxyalkyl-containing ladder silicone oligomer, (b-2) a crosslinkable functional group-containing ethylenically unsaturated monomer and optionally (b-3) another ethylenically unsaturated monomer.

An aqueous primer composition for use in applying to polyolefin resin substrates which is excellent in adhesiveness to polyolefin resin substrates, water resistance and gasoline resistance and which is free from the problems of fire and environments pollution. The primer composition comprises a resin component (a) of 100 parts by weight of modified polyolefin which is prepared by modifying polyolefin with an .alpha., .beta.-unsaturated carboxylic acids and which contains 0.05 to 0.5 equivalent of free carboxylic acid groups per 100 g, with the other resin component (b) of 5 to 500 parts by weight of modified resin having both ethylenically unsaturated double bonds and free carboxylic acid groups, which modified resin is prepared by adding an .alpha., .beta.-unsaturated dicarboxylic anhydride to a drying oil or a conjugated diene polymer or conjugated diene copolymer and then opening the ring of the acid anhydride group; and is prepared by neutralizing at least a part of free carboxylic acid groups of said modified polyolefin of component (a) and/or said modified resin of component (b) with a base and then dissolving or dispersing them in water.
