A new flatting agent for self-curing or radiation-curing coating systems is disclosed. The flatting agent is a liquid dimerdiol (meth)acrylate with a degree of esterification of at least 50%. The dimerdiol (meth)acrylate ester is introduced into the coating system in an amount of 1-25% by weight based on the coating system as a whole. The coating system can have additional solid flatting agents in the system.

The disclosed invention relates to mixtures of acrylic or methacrylic compounds containing 1 to 35% by weight and, more particularly, 5 to 25% by weight epoxy (meth)acrylates, based on the total quantity of acrylic or methacrylic compounds, the mixture being obtainable by a process comprising the following steps: a) esterifying hydroxyl compounds with acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid, b) optionally adding more acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid and c) reacting the excess acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid with epoxides in the presence of the esterification product of a). Said mixtures are suitable for use as radiation-curable compositions for coating systems, such as paints, coating compositions and the like.

The process is used to monitor the stability of compositions and reaction mixtures which contain vinylog compounds, more especially (meth)acrylic acid and/or (meth)acrylates. The content of dissolved oxygen in the composition or in the reaction mixture is determined and compared with predetermined reference values. Incipient or threatening polymerization is detected as early as possible and well before polymerization actually begins. Monitoring can be carried out simply, inexpensively and, in particular, safely both during storage and transportation and during the course of reactions, more particularly during the esterification of (meth)acrylic acid with mono- or polyhydric alcohols.

Provided are low-viscosity aqueous compositions comprising compounds of Formula (III) and (IV). These compositions are prepared by jointly ethoxylating a mixture of the compounds of the Formula (I) and (II) to give an intermediate which represents a mixture of compounds of Formulas (I*) and (II*). The intermediate is then converted by sulfation or phosphation and subsequent neutralization, into an aqueous composition comprising the compounds of Formula (III) and (IV). The aqueous compositions are notable for having, at 20° C., a Brookfield viscosity of 3000 mPas or less (measured at 20° C. with spindle 2 and 20 rpm), and are suitable as emulsifiers for emulsion polymerization.
