A method and apparatus for supplying a timing signal from a central unit to at least one radio head connected to the central unit via a communications link. The central unit transmits a downlink signal to the radio head(s) via the communications link based on a transmit clock supplied via a clock selector within the central unit. In a first mode, the clock selector supplies a clock signal derived from a network downlink signal received at the central unit, such as from a MSC, as the transmit clock. However, in response to the loss of the network downlink signal, a second mode is entered wherein the clock selector instead supplies a clock signal derived from an uplink clock signal generated by the radio head, such as by a PLL therein, as the transmit clock. Thus, the central unit may supply a reference clock signal to the radio head even when the network downlink signal is temporarily lost.

This is followed by a data signal which may include additional data that has an encoded format of binary ones and zeros, such that the appearance of the binary one in the data signal causes the phase modulation of the clock pulse signal by the selection of one of the jitter frequencies of a given amplitude. The appearance of a binary zero causes the selection of another frequency of a given amplitude to thereby modulate the clock pulse signal resulting in a phase modulated clock pulse signal that includes the encoded data in the data or additional signal.

A method and apparatus for supplying a timing signal from a central unit to at least one radio head connected to the central unit via a communications link. An external signal, typically generated by a MSC, is received at a first framer of the central unit and the first framer generates a reference clock signal based thereon. This reference clock signal is used as the transmit clock for a second framer, known as the radio head framer. The radio head framer transmits a radio head downlink signal to the radio head(s) via the communications link. The radio head downlink signal typically includes payload information and an associated timing reference signal, typically in the form of an embedded clock signal. This timing reference signal of the downlink is based on the reference clock signal from the first framer, rather than being based on a clock signal from an oscillator within the central unit. The transceivers within the radio head(s) may then control their RF transmissions using the timing reference signal from the radio head framer of the central unit. Accordingly, the radio head(s) are provided with a timing reference signal that is based relatively directly on the signal from the MSC.

The information message is processed at the current CU, including determining whether the CU identifier value matches the identity of the current CU where the information message is a downlink message.

The interconnection topology of a serial data communications bus allows for efficient communications within a wireless communications network. A wide-area wireless mobile communications system comprises a MSC connected to a plurality of base stations via a serial communications bus and a first serial port having a first connection order. Each base station also connects to the serial communications bus via a second serial port having an opposite connection order. In one mode, the MSC communicates with each base station over the serial bus through the first serial port. In a second mode, each base station can communicate directly with any other base station over the serial bus, with one base station utilizing the first serial port, and the other base station utilizing the second serial port. The invention is also applicable to a limited-area wireless communications system.

A Performance Report Message or other message is received from a first device at a second device. The received message is revised such that a value of a Terminal Endpoint Identifier field in the message is revised according to a predetermined transformation, e.g., by incrementing the value in the Terminal Endpoint Identifier field. The revised message is then transmitted from the second device to a third device. The first, second and third devices may comprise devices of a wireless communications network, such as radio heads and/or a control part (COP). The message is preferably received over a first T1 link connecting the first and second devices, and the revised message is preferably transmitted over a second T1 link connecting the second and third devices. The revised message may be received at the third device, the revised value of the Terminal Endpoint Identifier field of the received revised message recovered, and a communications link and/or device to which the revised message pertains identified based on the recovered revised value of the Terminal Endpoint Identifier field, preferably in conjunction with a value in a Command/Response field in the received revised message.
