Abstract:
A TV with various licensable components including, e.g., an ATSC demodulator requests a license for a component upon detection of a physical condition implicating use of the component, such as plugging a cable into a particular port, or upon receipt of a user-input command requiring use of the component, such as a request to autoscan channels.
Abstract:
A TV has a makeup mode in which a camera on the TV images a viewer of the TV and presents the viewer's image on the TV. To illuminate the viewer, the TV also juxtaposes with the viewer's image an all-white background image having a known color temperature and brightness.
Abstract:
System and method for changing a current input terminal of a user device. In one embodiment of the invention, a method includes receiving an input terminal change request, requesting that a current input terminal be changed from a first input terminal to a second input terminal. The method may further include determining if an external device is connected to the second input terminal. In one embodiment of the invention, the second input terminal includes a connection detection switch. The method may also include switching to the second input terminal when the connection detection switch indicates an external device connection and skipping the second input terminal when the connection detection switch indicates no external device connected according to one embodiment of the invention.
Abstract:
A digital TV (DTV) incorporates a TV white space device capable of operating on plural TV frequencies and responsive to the DTV processor to send a signal to an interfering white space device nearby the DTV that is interfering with a TV channel being presented on the TV. The signal sent from the TV white space device to the interfering white space device alters operation of the interfering white space device so as to reduce if not eliminate the interference.
Abstract:
A contract manufacturer (CM) makes a consumer electronics (CE) device under the auspices of a brand name manufacturer (BNM) associated with the CE device, paying royalties immediately on licensable components in the CE device that are activated for sale and not paying royalties on licensable components in the CE device that are deactivated for sale. Should a purchaser subsequently activate an originally deactivated licensable component, the CM receives this information and pays royalties accordingly on the now-activated licensable component.
Abstract:
A purchaser of a CE device informs a retail clerk, at the point of sale (POS) of features of the CE device the purchaser wishes to employ, some of which require a license. The CE device is vended without the licenses but the clerk can upload the desired features to a server, which correlates the features to licensable components and which returns to the POS the license codes needed to enable the components. The codes can be provided to the CE device using RFID at the POS, or storing the codes on a removable storage at the POS and giving the storage to the purchaser, or by printing the codes as bar codes in the sales receipt at the POS and giving the receipt to the purchaser, who later scans the codes past a camera of the CE device to enable the associated licensable components.
Abstract:
Shuttered eyewear comprising: a frame; a right eye shutter supported by the frame; a left eye shutter supported by the frame; and a sensor arranged to detect light passing through the right eye shutter, the left eye shutter, or both.
Abstract:
An interceptor detects command signals from a TV remote control and logs the signals. The signals can be correlated not just to channel number but also to programs by accessing a program/channel database. A log of channels/programs that have been viewed by, e.g., a child can thus be obtained and viewed by a parent.
Abstract:
A system and method are provided for triggering a demonstration mode of a display device. In one embodiment, a process includes displaying data received by a first input of the display device, monitoring a broadcast channel by the display device, and detecting a triggering signal in the broadcast channel. The process may also include displaying a demonstration based on detection of the triggering signal. Once the demonstration is complete, data received by the first input may be displayed.
Abstract:
An antenna unit for a TV. The antenna unit, which can be roof-mounted, includes a tuner and a demodulator so that it outputs a baseband signal containing IP packets representing a TV signal, requiring only a twisted pair Ethernet-type connection between the antenna unit and TV.
