    摘要: An optical scanning system is provided for producing a signal representative of a spatial distribution of indicia having different degrees of reflectivity to light, such as a bar code (14). The system includes an optical scanner (12) for scanning beam of light over the spatial distribution of indicia (14) and for producing an electrical signal corresponding to changes in the degree of reflectivity of the indicia. A digitizer (20), responsive to detections in a predetermined characteristic of the produced electrical signal is provided. The digitizer (20) converts the detections into digital words, such digital signals having a plurality of bits. The digitizer includes a timing generation circuit (42) for producing a pulse in response to each one of the detections with a time duration representative of the degree of reflectivity of the indicia as the beam of light. A decoder converts the time duration of the pulse into the digital word having a plurality of bits. An enhancement filter (30) is also disclosed. The enhancement filter (30) modifies pulses produced by a differentiator circuit (24) used in the scanner. Such modification includes increasing the rise time, and peak level of, the pulses produced by the differentiator circuit (24).

    摘要: A scanning device incorporates a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL). The laser diode may be mounted directly on an Si substrate which is adapted for movement to produce a scan pattern. A collimating lens may be directly mounted on the emitting surface of the laser. A plurality of lasers may be mounted on the substrate and operated in sequence without movement of the substrate to produce the effect of a scan. The scanning device emits visible or invisible light towards a target such as a bar code and a detector (mounted on the same or an adjacent substrate) senses the light reflected by the target to produce data which is decoded for further processing. A VCSEL uses low current and emits light from a relatively large area so that a relatively large amount of light is emitted for relatively small heat generation.

    摘要: A bar code reader for reading a symbol located at a distance from the laser comprises an array of groups of reading elements and an array of selectable liquid crystal elements. Each of the groups of reading elements have an associated predetermined operating focal distance. At least one liquid crystal element corresponds to each group of reading elements. In the bar code reader, a device activates a selected liquid crystal element to transmit light to a selected group of reading elements. In this way, the reading elements can operate at a predetermined, fixed operating focal distance.

    摘要: A reader generates a scanning beam for reading a bar code symbol on a selected item. The reader includes a database in which codes for all symbols to be read are stored, and frequency of use data indicative of how often each stored code has been read. A processor compares the code of the symbol being scanned with the stored codes. Upon a successful comparison, the code is processed as a valid code. Upon failure to match the code to one of the stored codes, a most likely code is selected as the valid code. The most likely code is based on the frequency of use data.

    摘要: A portable terminal has a housing with a motion detector housed therein. Movement of the housing from a a rest position is detected by sensing the motion of a coil or magnet located within the housing. A controller activates circuitry within the housing responsive to the detected movement. The terminal may include a touch sensitive display, on a flat front surface of the housing. A light emitter and an optical detector may also be disposed within the housing. Preferably, the terminal also houses a sensor for sensing different specific positional orientations of the terminal and activating or deactivating terminal functions depending on the sensed orientation.
