Abstract:
A fault current limiter is provided that comprises a magnetically saturable core. The first core includes a first leg, a second leg, with a first AC coil wound on the second leg, a third leg, with a second AC coil wound around the third leg, the first and second AC coils being wound in series and connected to a first phase AC source, and a fourth leg. The first magnetic biasing unit is arranged to produce a first closed magnetic circuit in the first leg and the second leg that has a first flux direction, and the second coil is arranged to produce a second closed magnetic circuit in the fourth leg and the third leg that has a second flux direction, wherein the first flux direction opposes the second flux direction. The first and second AC coils are arranged to produce a first closed AC magnetic circuit in the second and third legs in an AC flux direction that alternates with each AC half-cycle.
Abstract:
Powder defoaming compositions comprising one or more water soluble alkali salts, and one or more defoaming agents. Also disclosed are compositions including flowable materials and a defoaming composition, and methods for reducing the amount of gas present in a fluid using said defoaming compositions.
Abstract:
A device for generating a nebulized sample for detection of an analyte. The device includes a surface acoustic wave (SAW) transducer and a superstrate. The superstrate has a first surface for coupling with the SAW transducer and a second surface for receiving a fluid sample incorporating the analyte. The fluid sample is nebulized from the second surface. The superstrate is provided with an electrical connection extending from the second surface of the superstrate to provide a conducting path from a charge source to the second surface of the superstrate. The charge source may be the surface of the transducer or an external voltage source.
Abstract:
A method is presented for communicating data in a multibeam satellite system utilizing frequency re-use. The method comprises establishing uplink service beams and downlink service beams between a satellite and a plurality of subscriber terminals. A plurality of the uplink service beams are transmitted to the satellite by re-using at least one common uplink frequency channel. A plurality of the downlink service beams are transmitted from the satellite by re-using at least one common downlink frequency channel. The method further comprises establishing at least one uplink feeder beam and at least one downlink feeder beam between the satellite and a gateway terminal. The at least one uplink feeder beam is transmitted to the satellite by further re-using the at least one common uplink frequency channel. The at least one downlink feeder beam is transmitted from the satellite by further re-using the at least one common downlink frequency channel.

Abstract:
A method is presented for utilizing excess satellite bus power comprising (1) sending a broadband signal in at least one feeder beam in a forward direction from a gateway terminal to a bent pipe repeater satellite for relay to at least one subscriber terminal, wherein the satellite is operable to provide a total amount of bus power, wherein an existing payload consumes an occupied portion of the total bus power, wherein an additional payload consumes a remaining portion of the total bus power and comprises a plurality of satellite-based transmission amplifiers, (2) receiving the broadband signal and amplifying the broadband signal using one of the plurality of satellite-based transmission amplifiers, (3) sending the amplified broadband signal, as one of a plurality of service spot beams, to the at least one subscriber terminal, and (4) receiving and retrieving data from the amplified broadband signal at the at least one subscriber terminal.
Abstract:
A microresonator sensor apparatus has a microcavity resonator that defines equatorial whispering gallery modes (EWGMs), whose frequencies are separated by the free spectral range (FSR). The EWGMs lie in a plane perpendicular to a microcavity resonator axis. A light source is optically coupled to inject light into the microcavity resonator. The light source produces output light having an output spectrum whose bandwidth is approximately equal to or broader than the FSR of the EGWMs. One or more fluorescent materials are excited using the excitation light coupled into the microcavity resonator. A fluorescent signal arising from fluorescence of the one or more fluorescent materials is then detected.
Abstract:
A combined toilet brush and plunger, termed the Splunger, combines both functions in one tool. In order to do so, the Splunger can be converted, conveniently and without tools, from a substantially rigid configuration in which a mop head is effectively mounted on one end of a rigid handle, so as to be employed as a conventional toilet brush, to a flexible configuration in which the mop head is extended on a flexible but incompressible member, so that it can be forced into the constricted passages of a toilet, clearing it out.
