Abstract: Provided are a digital photographing apparatus in which a read-out mode may be changed when capturing a moving image, and a method of controlling the digital photographing apparatus. The method includes capturing a moving image having a predetermined frame rate in a first read-out mode, estimating a brightness of surroundings and then determining a shutter speed of a frame to be currently captured based on the estimated brightness of the surroundings, determining whether or not an exposure time that is dependent on the shutter speed is longer than a predetermined time period, and changing the first read-out mode to a second read-out mode that has a shorter read-out time than the first read-out mode when the exposure time is longer than the predetermined time period.
