摘要： Expansion of an air bag can be smoothly effected even in a small space by controlling the air bag in thickness and introduction of the gas for expansion, and the protection of an occupant can be rapidly implemented with a relatively small volume of the gas. An air bag device comprises a first air chamber 12 for protection of the chest or the waist of an occupant, a second air chamber 14 for protection of the head of the occupant, and a lower portion of the diffuser bag 30 interposed therebetween for portioning out gas from an inflator 20, wherein the second air chamber 14 has a first tether 50 forming a gas passage 14a for guiding gas jetted from gas outlets of the lower portion of the diffuser bag 30 into the second air chamber 14 so as to go around the tether of a head protection region of an air bag 1, from the back side thereof toward the front side thereof, and has a second tether 52 for forming a gap provided at the lower end of the first tether 50 in the vicinity of the gas outlets, for letting a portion of the gas escape into a front part of the second air chamber 14.

摘要： In an airbag device, a decorative member is prevented from being scattered with a simple structure at the time of expansion of an airbag. That is, a concave part of the airbag cover (50) on which the decorative member is mounted is connected to an unmoved connection member while freely separable from other portions at the time of expansion of an airbag. To that end, there are formed, on the inner faces of the airbag cover (50), a circular tear line Lc for partitioning the concave part (52) and a plurality of tear lines L1˜4 extending outward from the tear line Lc in the radial direction thereof for forming each of opening pieces (50a). Further, attachment pieces (50b) of respective opening pieces (50a) are fastened to plastic deformable attachment parts of a base plate by screws. With this structure, the concave part of the airbag cover can be immovably held at the time of spread of the airbag.

When the airbag (2) is expanded in emergency situations, the attachment side base cloth (3) is expanded while it moves away outwardly from the cloth-like piece (9), thereby opening a vent hole (8), so that the airbag (2) is eased in abrupt expansion directing toward an occupant. When the airbag (2) becomes a sufficient size to protect the occupant, it bends instantaneously a retaining plate (17) to release the parallel portion (9B) of the cloth-like piece (9) from the presser plate (13), so that the cloth-like piece (9) is brought into intimate contact with the attachment side base cloth (3) to close the vent hole (8), thereby protecting the occupant with reliability.
