    Abstract: An airbag includes a mounting portion, a top wall deployable towards a vehicle occupant, and a circumferential wall disposed between the mounting portion and top wall. An airbag base member for forming the airbag includes a top-forming panel for forming the top wall, and at least three circumferential panels that extend generally radially from the top-forming panel and form the circumferential wall by being joined together by adjoining edges thereof. Each of the circumferential panels is formed into a generally band-like contour which has a first and a second curving edges that make the circumferential panel enlarge in width from the leading end towards an intermediate portion and then narrow towards the top-forming panel. When the airbag base member is laid flat, adjoining edges of any two adjoining circumferential panels are generally symmetrical to each other in curving shape with respect to a line disposed there between.

    Abstract: A side airbag apparatus includes an airbag main body. The inside of the airbag main body is divided by a vertical partition including a gas flow restrictor at least into an upstream inflation portion, which is located rearward of the vertical partition and receives inflating gas, and a downstream inflation portion, which is located forward of the vertical partition and receives the inflating gas that has passed through the upstream inflation portion and the gas flow restrictor. The dimension of the vertical partition in the widthwise direction of the automobile seat is set to a dimension that is equal or approximate to the dimension of the airbag main body in the widthwise direction in a case in which the airbag main body is inflated without the vertical partition.

    Abstract: An inflation portion of an airbag, which is inflated by inflation gas, is partitioned into an upstream inflation portion and a downstream inflation portion via a partition member. When being tensioned in a planar manner, the partition member has a length in a longitudinal direction that is longer than a length in a transverse direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction. A pressure regulating valve that is closed at an early stage of a supply period of the inflation gas to the inflation portion and is opened from the middle of the supply period includes a slit-like inner opening that is provided on the partition member and extends in the transverse direction and a pair of valve body portions that are provided around the inner opening and are selectively positioned close to and separated from each other.

    Abstract: A gas generator includes an inflator and a retainer. The retainer includes a holding portion, which partially covers the inflator. The inflator has an attaching protrusion for determining the position relative to the retainer. The retainer includes an engagement base and a tongue piece. The tongue piece extends in an axial direction of the inflator and from a position separated from the engagement base in the circumferential direction of the holding portion. The engagement base and the tongue piece each have an engagement portion. The engagement portions face each other to form an engagement space therebetween, into which the attaching protrusion enters. The engagement space has an inlet the width of which is less than the size of the positioning protrusion. When the inflator causes the positioning protrusion to increase the width of the inlet, the tongue piece is elastically deformed about a basal end of the tongue piece.

    Abstract: An airbag for a steering wheel is configured to cover an upper surface of the steering wheel generally all over when inflated. The airbag includes a driver-protection portion that is configured to be deployed towards a driver's seat and restrain a driver, a central protruding portion that is disposed in a vicinity of a center of the driver-protection portion and protrudes towards the driver's seat, a circumferential protruding portion that is disposed in a vicinity of an outer circumferential edge of the driver-protection portion and protrudes towards the driver's seat, and a small protruding portion that is disposed between the central protruding portion and circumferential protruding portion and protrudes towards the driver's seat. The small protruding portion is smaller in protruding amount than the central protruding portion and the circumferential protruding portion.

    Abstract: A section of an inflator from a longitudinally middle portion to a gas outlet is defined as an insertion section. The insertion section is inserted in an airbag through an insertion opening and is arranged along the inner wall surface of the airbag. The inflator includes a proximal end located opposite to the gas outlet. The section of the inflator from the middle portion to the proximal end, that is, an exposed section is located outside the airbag and is arranged along the outer wall surface of the airbag. A lid sheet inside the airbag closes a gap between an inner edge of the insertion opening and the inflator from a position inward of the insertion section. The lid sheet includes a joint located along the rear portion of the insertion opening in the insertion direction of the inflator. The lid sheet is joined to the airbag with the joint.

    Abstract: An airbag is manufactured as follows. In a first joining step, peripheral portions of structural fabric portions that are located closer to the main body fabric portions at the installation are joined to the main body fabric portions in a spread state. In a second joining step, a part that is not overlaid onto the structural fabric portions is joined to the main body fabric portions, and a part that is overlaid onto the structural fabric portions is joined only to the structural fabric portions. In a third joining step, peripheral portions of the structural fabric portions that are separated away from the main body fabric portions at the installation are joined to each other.
