Any abnormality in the state of discharge of the ink is performed by executing a test discharging operation. When the recording apparatus functions as a facsimile apparatus, the test discharging operation is conducted by discharging only the black ink, without discharging inks of other colors. Wasteful consumption of ink is diminished, so that the running cost of the ink jet recording apparatus is reduced.

A second CPU of the printer unit performs a paper exhausting operation upon receiving the paper exhausting command, after recording of the predetermined pattern, and upon conveying the recording paper up to a predetermined position, sends a signal for starting detection of the predetermined pattern to the first CPU. The first CPU thereby receives a detection signal from a photo sensor. The second CPU further conveys the recording paper, and at a timing of exhausting out of the apparatus, sends a signal for the detection end of the predetermined pattern to the first CPU. Thereby, it is possible to detect correctly the pattern for detection of the emptiness of ink and the recording paper jam which is recorded at the trailing portion of the recording paper.

A sensor monitors whether the recording sheet is moved off a contact of a feed roller which feeds the recording sheet to a record position and a pinch roller. Before a trailing edge of the recording sheet is moved off the contact of the feed roller and the pinch roller, bilateral recording is conducted to print in each of forward movement and backward movement of the carriage. When the sensor detects that the trailing edge of the recording sheet has been moved off the contact of the feed roller and the pinch roller, the recording is switched to unilateral printing. The print range at the trailing edge of the recording medium is thus extended.

A data recording/reproduction method and apparatus uses an optical disk equipped with wobbling track guide grooves disposed in a track scanning direction and minutely wobbled. The apparatus uses a circuit for detecting and correcting displacement of an optical spot position from the wobbling track, and a system for allowing data to correspond to front and rear edges of recording pits as a recording system, and includes a circuit for independently handling reproduction pulses obtained from reproduction signals of the recording pits on the front and rear edge sides and for generating reproduction clocks. A circuit resynthesizes the two series of reproduction pulse trains by a specific pattern portion in the data. Another optical disk apparatus divides each track into zones, and switches a rate of revolution each zone to attain a substantially equal linear velocity. A servo signal reproduction clock generation circuit and a data signal recording/reproduction clock generation circuit are disposed separately. The latter changes a frequency division ratio in accordance with the zones so that a clock having a predetermined frequency can be generated even when the rate of revolution changes.
