The known pulverized coal combustion method including the steps of separating pulverized coal mixture gas ejected from a vertical type coal grinder into thick mixture gas and thin mixture gas by a distributor, and injecting these thick and thin mixture gases, respectively, through separate burner injecting ports into a common furnace to make them burn, is improved so as to reduce both an unburnt content in the ash and a nitrogen oxide concentration in exhaust gas while maintaining an excellent ignition characteristic. The improvements reside in that an air-to-fuel ratio of the thick mixture gas is regulated to within the range of 1-2, while an air-to-fuel ratio of the thin mixture gas is regulated to within the range of 3-6, and the range of a degree of pulverization of the pulverized coal is regulated to 100 mesh residue 1.5% or less. The degree of pulverization of the pulverized coal fed to the distributor is regulated either by adjusting the rotational speed of a rotary type classifier in the grinder or by adjusting the angles formed between classifying vanes, rotating about the axis of the rotary type classifier, and the direction of rotation.

A process for producing methanol reduces the emission of carbon dioxide which is responsible for global warming. The process involves the steps of generating steam by the use of nuclear heat of a high-temperature gas-cooled nuclear reactor, decomposing the steam into hydrogen with a steam electrolyzer, and synthesizing methanol from this hydrogen and carbon dioxide obtained from a carbon dioxide source. The process also involves the steps of converting carbon dioxide and hydrogen into carbon monoxide and steam by carrying out a reverse shift reactor, forming hydrogen and carbon monoxide, and reacting the hydrogen and carbon monoxide into methanol in a methanol synthesis column. The process permits the use of an existing methanol production facility. The process may be modified such that the gas composed of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen is mixed with hydrogen gas generated by the steam electrolyzer, and the resulting gas is converted into methanol. Also, a power generating plant is provided in which oxygen-enriched air, generated by the steam electrolyzer using nuclear heat of the high-temperature gas-cooled nuclear reactor, is used as combustion air.

An automated ultrasonic examination system for heat transfer tubes in a boiler makes it possible to perform ultrsonic examination from inside of the heat transfer tubes without necessitating the removal of scale from the outer surfaces of the boiler tubes by polishing and without necessitating access to places where manual measurements are difficult or impossible to make. The system includes an insert tube adapted to be inserted into a cylindrical header to which one of the heat transfer tubes are connected, an insert tube moving device for moving the insert tube in the axial direction of the header and revolving it about its own axis, an ejection nozzle provided on the insert tube, a water pump for feeding pressurized water to the ejection nozzle, a cable adapted to be inserted from the ejection nozzle into the heat transfer tube as passed through the insert tube by the pressurized water fed from the water pump, a cable accommodation tank for accommodating the cable, a revolving submerged ultrasonic probe mounted at the tip end of the cable, and an ultrasonic examination unit for processing signals sent from the probe and displaying the results of examination. Preferably, a device for detecting a length of the cable inserted into the heat transfer tube is provided in the automated ultrasonic examination system.

A dust collecting apparatus and method for dedusting a Ca-containing gas using a ceramics filter is provided, in which a filter differential pressure elevation rate is suppressed. A desulferizing agent 103 and a mineral 106 containing MgO are supplied via a hopper 13, 15 a valve 14 and a feeder 16 into a pressurized fluidized-bed combustion furnace 1 together with coal 101 and air 102. A combustion gas 201 is dedusted by a cyclone 2 to become a combustion gas 301, the combustion gas 301 enters a filter container 3a, 3b having a ceramics filter 31a, 31b and is further dedusted. A combustion gas 401 which is dedusted is supplied into a gas turbine 4 to generate power, and combustion gas 501 heats a waste heat recovery boiler 5 which in turn drives a steam turbine 7. The mineral 106 containing MgO is added in the combustion gas 301 which flows in the ceramics filter 31a, 31b. Thereby MgO is added to the combustion gas so that the filter differential pressure elevation rate can be suppressed. The more MgO that is supplied, the greater the effect becomes, and an operation stop due to the differential pressure elevation is eliminated.
