An apparatus for gating delivery of radiation by a radiation delivery system to a patient is described. The apparatus includes at least one electrode positionable adjacent to but not touching a patient, at least one capacitance sensor electrically connected to the at least one electrode and configured to monitor a capacitance of the at least one electrode and generate an output signal indicative of the capacitance, and at least one processor configured to receive and process the output signal, determine a computed measure of amplitude and/or phase of respiration of the patient, and generate a gating signal for enabling or inhibiting delivery of radiation by the radiation delivery system based on the determined measure of amplitude and/or phase of respiration of the patient.

A method for quantifying, during pacemapping, a comparison of a BSPM of interest to a pace site BSPM. The method may include receiving at a computing device a plurality of ECG signals from an acquisition system. The pace site BSPM may be calculated using the plurality of ECG signals. The BSPM of interest may be compared to the pace site BSPM, by: retrieving the BSPM of interest from memory accessible by the computing device and, calculating one or more comparison metrics for the BSPM of interest as compared to the pace site BSPM. An indication of similarity between the BSPM of interest and the pace site BSPM based on the comparison metric calculated may be displayed on a user interface in communication with the computing device.

Early dental caries detection is carried out by a method that combines optical coherence tomography (OCT) and Raman spectroscopy to provide morphological information and biochemical specificity for detecting and characterizing incipient carious lesions found in extracted human teeth. OCT imaging of tooth samples demonstrated increased light back-scattering intensity at sites of carious lesions as compared to the sound enamel. Raman microspectroscopy and fibre-optic based Raman spectroscopy are used to characterize the caries further by detecting demineralization-induced alterations of enamel crystallite morphology and/or orientation. OCT imaging is useful for screening carious sites and determining lesion depth, with Raman spectroscopy providing biochemical confirmation of caries. The combination is incorporated into a common probe operable without movement to scan the tooth surface and to provide an output for the dentist.
摘要:
In accordance with the present invention, it has been discovered that monocyte conditioned medium (MCM) obtained from patients with liver disease stimulates the proliferation of fibroblasts. Platelet derived growth factor (PDGF) has also been found to stimulate fibroproliferation of fibroblasts, and to be at least partially responsible for the fibroproliferative effect of the MCM. Further in accordance with the present invention, the effect of MCM and PDGF on the expression of c-fos and c-jun has been investigated, because c-fos and c-jun form AP-1 complexes which can stimulate genes involved in proliferation. It has recently been reported that pentoxifylline inhibits platelet derived growth factor-stimulated proliferation. The mechanism of this action of pentoxifylline is unclear. Thus, in the course of the work undertaken as part of the present invention, studies were conducted to determine whether pentoxifylline altered the expression of c-fos and c-jun. While PDGF was found to induce the expression of both c-fos and c-jun, pentoxifylline was found to effectively reduce the effect of PDGF-induced c-jun gene expression, without altering c-fos gene expression. These results suggest that pentoxifylline inhibits PDGF stimulated proliferation by decreasing c-jun expression. These results further suggest a variety of diseases and/or conditions which may also be successfully treated with pentoxifylline.
