It has a front wall with a hinged bottom edge and a free top edge associated with a cutting blade. The front wall is adapted to be moved from a position perpendicular to the bottom wall to a position in obtuse angle relationship to the bottom wall. The closure structure includes downwardly depending means which function to shield the cutting edge when the front wall is in perpendicular position and to lock the front wall in place when it is in angled position. When the carton is in use, the sheet material is threaded through the elongated slot and the front wall is locked in angled position.

Method and apparatus are disclosed for improving the structure of continuously cast strand by separating undesirable hot metal inclusions at locations spaced from cooling wall surfaces of a continuous casting mold and removing at least a portion of the superheat of molten metal internally of the shape being cast. Apparatus is provided for delivering hot metal subsurface to molten metal level within a continuous casting mold with a component of motion opposite to the direction of casting, initially confining such metal, and changing its direction of movement for separating undesirable inclusions. Apparatus is provided for introducing solid metal below the slag and molten metal surface into the high temperature zone.

The corrosion resistance of zinc coated ferrous metal substrates is increased markedly by electroplating at least a portion of the zinc surface thereof with a coating of metallic chromium having a thickness of about 0.1-0.5 microinch, and thereafter electrochemically treating the resultant metallic chromium coated substrate as a cathode in an aqueous electrolyte containing a water soluble hexavalent chromium compound to deposit a metallic chromium and chromium oxide containing film thereon. In one preferred variant, the zinc surface is brightened prior to the electrodeposition of the metallic chromium coating to thereby increase the brightness of the final product and to render it more pleasing in appearance. The chromium plated and electrochemically treated zinc coated ferrous metal substrate is an excellent base for protective organic coatings, and protective organic coatings may be applied thereto to further increase the corrosion resistance and/or for decorative purposes. The method of the invention is easily adapted to high speed electroplating lines operating at strip speeds of at least 500 feet per minute and costs may be reduced substantially. The invention also provides the corrosion resistant substrates prepared by the method of the invention.

Double-lever action, easy-open container structure with a unitary rivet securing the working end of a tab opener in aligned relationship with a starter section of an outer scoreline which defines a removable area. The direction of the outer scoreline from the narrow starter section through a wedge-shaped portion provides for a shearing action along the scoreline in place of the tensile stress breakage required by the prior art. Arcuate ribs assist in maintaining the shearing action by preventing bulging of the removable wall portion. A chisel pointed tab opener concentrates force to facilitate initial rupture.

Discoloration of ferrous metal strip electroplated with metallic chromium in a continuous electroplating line at high line speeds and then electrochemically treated to deposit a nonmetallic chromium containing film thereover is reduced by intimately contacting the metallic chromium plated strip with an aqueous solution of a water soluble hexavalent chromium compound prior to the electrochemical treatment. The aqueous solution preferably has a composition which is substantially the same as the chromium electroplating electrolyte. The invention is especially useful in producing tin free ferrous metal container stock having a composite protective coating including an undercoating of 0.1-0.5 microinch of metallic chromium and an overcoating containing chromium oxide.

An open-ended container is produced utilizing as a starting material a unitary drawn sheet metal container body which has a substantially circular endwall, a sidewall and a curved portion joining the two. This is achieved by full diameter blanking of the endwall. The blanking is carried out by the use of cooperating support and cutting dies. The support die is contoured to the interior of the container body. The cutting die contains a uni-diameter recess bounded by a cutting edge aligned with the sidewall of the support die. The resulting cut has a tapered configuration which facilitates curling of the sidewall in two steps to provide a rimmed opening.
