A digital decoder for a biphase-mark encoded serial digital signal detects edges in the encoded serial digital signal by sampling with a sample clock to produce a blivet signal. The blivet signal is filtered by a one-bit digital lowpass filter to recover a decoded clock signal and to generate a transition window signal. The blivet and window signals are used to detect whether there is a transition within each bit interval defined by the decoded clock signal. A decoded serial digital signal has a logical one for each bit interval in which a transition occurs, and a logical zero otherwise.

An operator interface for a video editing system provides a visual sense of the content of video sequences, as well as their length, while also providing enhanced interactive control of locations and time alignments of the video. As the video sequence is processed into the system, a small but representative sample of each frame is saved in a local memory, while the video itself is stored in mass storage. These samples are used to provide a video pictorial timeline of the underlying stored video. The location of an operator's view into the video sequence is controlled by a cursor's movement along a detailed video pictorial timeline, a reverse motion area and a forward motion area to provide VTR control for location changes on the video tape. The cursor's movement can be controlled by a mouse or a knob. Icons, either static or dynamic, are produced within the motion areas to indicate the amount of selected velocity. Timelines can be marked with time marks, roughly aligned and then automatically fine aligned by the system according to their respective time markers. The editing results associated with these timelines are also time aligned as a result of this process.

The shaped foreground and background videos are combined to generate a composite video. The transfer function may be generated and stored in a PROM/RAM buffer as a lookup table by a CPU. The transfer function may also be generated interactively by adjusting various points on the transfer function individually, with the CPU storing the resulting transfer function in the PROM/RAM buffer.

A single loop analog-to-digital conversion and video clamping circuit includes a low-pass filter and analog amplifier that present the incoming analog video signal to an analog-to-digital converter and to the input of a limit detector and protection circuit. The output of the analog-to-digital converter is sampled an integer multiple of four times during the black interval, with the results being summed and averaged. The resulting value is then scaled and limited, and compared to the desired level for a representation of black. Any resulting error quantity is converted from digital back to, analog and modified if necessary by the output of the limit detector and protection circuit. The signal that results from that modification is low-pass filtered and converted to a current by a transconductance amplifier. The resulting feedback current is then applied to a capacitor in the input circuitry, thereby clamping the input and resulting digital output of the overall circuit to the desired level. This circuit is also compatible with automated digital diagnostics, in that changing the desired black level by a small but detectable amount and verifying correct operation can he accomplished even in the presence of a video signal. And, in the absence of a video signal, the reference level can be changed between black and white and the digital output video value can be read back by a microprocessor to verify correct operation.

The shaped background video signal is a function of a background video signal and a primary chroma key signal from the primary hue selector.
