摘要: A spin transfer torque (STT) device is formed on an electrically conductive substrate and includes a ferromagnetic free layer near the substrate, a ferromagnetic polarizing layer and a nonmagnetic spacer layer between the free layer and the polarizing layer. A multilayer structure is located between the substrate and the free layer. The multilayer structure includes a metal or metal alloy seed layer for the free layer and an intermediate oxide layer below and in contact with the seed layer. The intermediate oxide layer reflects spin current from the free layer and thus reduces undesirable damping of the oscillation of the free layer's magnetization by the seed layer.

摘要: A semiconductor memory device, also referred to as a solid state drive, includes thermally conductive components such as a conductive coating to draw heat away from the semiconductive package. The coating may also be electrically conductive to provide shielding from and absorption of electromagnetic interference. In examples, a semiconductor device including a substrate may be affixed to an edge connector printed circuit board with solder balls to form a solid state drive. In further examples, the substrate may be omitted, and semiconductor memory dies, a controller die and other electronic components may be directly surface mounted to an edge connector printed circuit board to form a solid state drive.

摘要: A method and apparatus for carrying out a database select, or query, on a data storage device, upon data stored on that device. Data is received from a host and compressed on the data storage device using a compression code developed on the data storage device for the data. When the host issues a database select request on the compressed data, the compression code is distributed to processing cores of the data storage device and compiled, including the select request, into machine code. The machine code is used to decompress the compressed data while filtering the data with the select request. The filtering result is returned to the host.

摘要: The present disclosure generally relates to a storage snapshot management system. When updated data is written to the memory device, rather than rewriting all of the data, only the updated data is written to a new namespace. A snapshot of the new namespace indicates which LBAs in the new namespace contain data. New namespaces are added each time data is updated. When the updated data is to be read, the data storage device reads the updated LBA from the new namespace, and also gathers the non-updated data from the previous namespace. Eventually, the number of namespaces for the data reaches a threshold, and thus some namespaces need to be evicted. To evict a namespace, the updated data in the namespace is moved to a different namespace, or the non-updated data is moved to a namespace that contains updated data. In either case, the now unused namespaces are evicted.

摘要: A data storage device includes a memory device having a plurality of blocks and a controller coupled to the memory device. The controller is configured to determine that an uncorrectable error correction code (UECC) failure has occurred to a block of the plurality of blocks, enable a UECC anti-strike mechanism, and erase the block. The UECC anti-strike mechanism comprises converting a read failure associated with the block to an erase failure. The controller is further configured to retire the block upon determining that the erase is unsuccessful.

摘要: A semiconductor device package includes a multi-layer substrate including a bottom layer and a top layer. One or more dies are mounted on and electrically coupled to the top layer of the substrate. An electromagnetic interference (EMI) shield encapsulates the substrate and the semiconductor dies. A first plurality of conductive stubs is positioned around edges of the top layer of the substrate. Each of the conductive stubs includes an edge portion having a first thickness and in contact with the EMI shield. A second plurality of conductive stubs is positioned around edges of the bottom layer of the substrate. Each of the second plurality of conductive stubs includes an edge portion having a second thickness less than the first thickness and in contact with the EMI shield.

摘要: Example systems, data storage devices, and methods to provide data protection during concurrent operations for multiple actuator data storage devices are described. The data storage device includes a plurality of actuators configured to actuate a plurality of heads over different subsets of a plurality of disk surfaces. Responsive to receiving a write command for one of the actuators, the coupling state with at least one other of the actuators is determined and execution of write commands is inhibited if the coupling state indicates a possible coupling event. The inhibit of the write commands in the presence of coupling events may prevent off-track writes and protect data.

摘要: A non-volatile storage apparatus comprises one or more memory die assemblies, each of which includes an inference circuit positioned in the memory die assembly. The inference circuit is configured to use a pre-trained model (received pre-trained from a source external to the non-volatile storage apparatus and stored in a dedicated block in non-volatile memory) with one or more metrics describing current operation of the non-volatile storage apparatus in order to predict a defect in the non-volatile storage apparatus and perform a countermeasure to preserve host data prior to a non-recoverable failure in the non-volatile storage apparatus due to the defect.

摘要: The present disclosure generally relates to data storage devices, and more specifically, to a magnetic media drive employing a magnetic recording head. The magnetic recording head comprises a main pole and a trailing shield disposed adjacent to the main pole. A recessed edge of the trailing shield has throat heights varying in the cross-track direction. In one embodiment, a central portion of the trailing shield disposed adjacent or closest to the main pole has a first throat height less than a second throat height of outer portions of the trailing shield further from the main pole. In another embodiment, the central portion of the trailing shield has a first throat height greater than a second throat height of outer portions of the trailing shield. The trailing shield having varying throat heights in the cross-track direction strengthens the writing capability or improves the XTI of the magnetic recording head.
