    摘要: Plantlets from a bare-root, cutting or tissue culture condition are automatically planted into a nursery container. The apparatus creates a continuous supply of V-shaped notches in planting substrate, into which plantlets are placed and then the substrate is closed about the roots, creating a "sandwich" or "book" effect. The resulting plug members with the substrate closed around the plants roots or stem are automatically transplanted into a nursery container for subsequent growing. Plantlets with small roots are quickly and efficiently placed in the substrate without injury or transplant shock. The apparatus is particularly useful for small plantlets or early stage germinants that have both roots and shoots (such as tissue culture material derived from either micropropagation or somatic embryogenesis) but it can also be used with rooted or unrooted cuttings, true or synthetic seed or naked embryos.

    摘要: A nursery container that provides an improved root structure for plants intended to be transplanted into the ground. This container is characterized by a base that is constructed to direct initial root growth towards an elevated opening that is centrally located in the base. It is through this opening where initial root growth is air pruned thus encouraging the early development of secondary lateral roots. The base design also serves to aerate the growing medium in the center of the container thus aiding in the reduction of medium compacting and drainage. This container is also characterized by a plurality of vertical indentations that protrude towards the periphery of the container, each one being open at the bottom. Because of these indentations the root tips are encouraged to grow down towards the openings for air pruning thus continuing the development of lateral roots. The indentations also serve to aerate the growing medium in the sidewall area. Furthermore this improved nursery container is designed to compensate for material thinning which is a characteristic of all thermoformed products. It also compensates for the limitations placed on nursery container design by the production method of blowmolding plastic containers.

    摘要: In a tape or packaged tape provided along the length thereof with pockets disposed transversely to the tape and with a desired spacing, said pockets being open at the top and the bottom and containing plants such as seedlings and beddingplants ready for transplantation together with the pockets as a continuous tape. The tape including the pockets and the plants is quite flat and bendable, windable spirally and foldable flat upon itself into a package. The pockets comprise two wall-forming thin layers of material fixed to each other at intervals and being adapted for the supply and regulation of the air and water necessary for the development and growth of the plants inside the packaged tape without the coexistence of any further growth medium thereabout. The plants are developed inside the packaged tape such and the materials of the pocket walls are selected such that the roots of the plants adhere to or penetrate into at least one of said layers, whereas the roots are prevented from penetrating through at least one of the said layers. The tensile strength of the tape is at least on Newton.In producing the tape, a packaged tape containing viable plant material is soaked with water of a controlled pH and conductance. The soaked package is placed in a germinator box under conditions controlled as to temperature, humidity, and composition of the air and light, thereby assuring the best possible conditions for the germination and development of the roots.Then the packaged tape is moved to a greenhouse for further development of the top of the plants under conditions controlled as to temperature and content of moisture and nutrients in the package.In this manner there is constructed a continuous tape containing seedlings or beddingplants allowing the rational and inexpensive production of plants of a uniform, high quality, said tape in addition being suited for a direct, mechanical transplantation on the growing habitat.

The blade is then slid along the sheet, away from the edge secured to the base, to form the mud into a generally cylindrical shape around the roots.

    摘要: An apparatus useful in the production of the paper pot assembly for raising and transplanting the seedlings of farm crops, said paper pot assembly comprising a plurality of cylindrical pots each having a square configuration in section. The apparatus comprises means for applying equidistantly spaced parallel lines or a wide strip of adhesive to one-half the width of one side of each flattened tube, tape-gathering means for converging a plurality of the flattened tubes thus applied with the adhesive to superpose consecutively the flattened tubes on one another in such a manner that two adjacent flattened tubes are disposed in a transversely staggered relation to one another with adjacent tubes overlapping by one-half their width. A combined regulating and guide means controls the travel of the flattened tubes and guides them into pressure rollers where the flattened tubes are adhered together while correctly keeping the staggered or overlapped relation.

    摘要: Rod-shaped incipient plant carrying devices which contain or can contain seeds or plant cuttings are formed from a web of paper and a filler of synthetic fibers and/or particles of synthetic foam which are first accumulated into a relatively thin but wide layer which is thereupon converted into a narrow stream. The stream is condensed and simultaneously draped into the web to form therewith a continuous rod which is severed by a cutoff to yield a file of discrete carring devices of unit length or multiple unit length. Particles of fertilizer can be admixed to the fibers and/or foam particles of the stream, and spaced-apart portions of the stream can receive seeds in such distribution that the seed in the finished carrying device is equidistant from both end faces of the filler. A bonding agent can be sprayed onto the layer to ensure adherence of neighboring fibers and/or foam particles to one another. The filler can consist of mineral fibers, cellulosic fibers, wood fibers, a mixture of such fibers, phenol-formaldehyde foam, urea formaldehyde foam, polystyrene foam, polyurethane foam, a mixture of such foams or a mixture of foam and fibers.
