The compositions comprise volatile organic compounds effective to inhibit the growth of, or kill pathogenic microbes, including Ganoderma boninense. Invention compositions are especially useful in preventing and treating basal stem rot in the oil palm, and can be applied in the vicinity of the plant or used to sterilize the plant growth medium prior to or concurrent with plant growth therein.

The present invention discloses antimicrobial compositions of modified coconut oil and palm kernel oil derived from catalytic activity of 1,3 positional specific lipases. Said modified oil compositions comprises of free fatty acids (>9.4%), monoglycerides (>1.3%), diglycerides (>22.8%) and triglycerides (>25%) which inhibits the growth of gram positive bacteria i.e. Staphylococcus aurous aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Sterptococcus pyogene, gram negative bacteria i.e. Vibrio cholerae, Escherichia coli and yeast i.e. Candida albicans.

A novel class of carnitine derivatives is disclosed which comprises thiocarnitine and the S-acyl thiocarnitines wherein the acyl radical is the radical of saturated organic acids having from 2 to 10 carbon atoms. The S-acyl thiocarnitines are prepared e.g. by reacting crotonoyl betaine halogenide with the corresponding thio-acid, while thiocarnitine is obtained by hydrolysis of an S-acyl thiocarnitine. These compounds are useful therapeutic agents, e.g. for the treatment of intoxications, liver malfunctions and burns.

Acetylthio amides and esters were prepared by the free radical addition of thiolacetic acid to the terminal and nonterminal double bonds of N-substituted fatty amides and fatty esters. The free radical additions of the thiolacetic acid to the unsaturated compounds were initiated by irradiation using cobalt-60. The process using irradiation with cobalt-60 was also used to bring about the addition of bromotrichloromethane to N-substituted fatty amides and fatty esters to produce halogen-containing amides and esters. These new sulfur or halogen-containing compounds were found to have antimicrobial activity and to possess properties making them useful as antimicrobial agents.
