The process involves producing particles, drying the particles, cooling the particles, and then compressing them into a container or package. The package can be sealed to keep out moisture. Preservatives, molasses, or other additives may be included with the particles before packaging. The types of feedstuff or other material which is processed and packed may vary. Blends of particles can also be packaged.

Vegetable matter such as lucerne is dried; the latter is heated and then pressed. The liquid is treated in an evaporator employing, as heating fluid, low-pressure steam supplied by an ejector-compressor fed with high-pressure steam supplied, for example, by a nuclear power plant. Low-pressure steam taken from the outlet of the compressor-ejector is also employed to heat the lucerne at. The effluent leaving the evaporator is introduced with the remainder of the high-pressure steam into a drying unit in which air from the environment is preheated. The hot air is employed for drying the moist pressed matter.

A process for fractionating leafy green crops is disclosed. This process involves the separation of at least one valuable constitutent from the crop and preferably comprises the production of a dehydrated green crop together with one or more valuable by-products. The process includes a pressing or squeezing of the green crop which has been mixed with molasses serum which is a by-product of the operation. The pressed crop may then be dehydrated by normal methods. The rolled juice which is expelled from the wetted squeezed crop is then treated to coagulate a valuable protein therefrom and the remaining liquid is a molasses serum which is recycled to the green crop prior to the pressing step. That portion of the molasses serum which is not required for mixing with the green crop may be added to the pressed cake. Specific process steps regarding the process as applied to alfalfa are also disclosed.

The green crop is compressed and, during the compressing operation, is heated to a temperature of at least about the boiling point of water at the prevailing gas pressure; and the moisture emitted from the crop as a result is allowed to escape. Preferably, the green crop is held compressed during part of the time when steam is leaving it due to the heating, whereby a selfsustained or coherent end product is obtained.
