    摘要: The implant (20) is shaped to generally mimic the form of the trapezium (12), or portions thereof. For example, the implant optionally defines a first metacarpal projection (32) and a second metacarpal projection (34) spaced from the first metacarpal projection to form a C-type, or cuff-type receptacle (36) for receiving the first metacarpal (15) such as the first and second metacarpal projections extend along either side of the first metacarpal. The receptacle optionally acts as a support surface (36A) for the first metacarpal during articulation thereof. In some embodiments, the first metacarpal projection is configured to extend adjacent the end portion of the first metacarpal that is adjacent the CMC joint (10) and the second metacarpal projection is configured to extend into the space (19) between the end portions of the first and second metacarpals (15, 18), thereby helping maintain the intermetacarpal spacing between the first and second metacarpals. The implant may comprise an inflatable cover for minimally invasive implantation.

    摘要: A trapezium prosthesis is provided which includes a body having a frustocylindrical shape, the frustocylindrical shape including a frustum and an oppositely disposed planar base, the frustum being canted relative to a planar base. The prosthesis may be made of a swellable fluid absorbing polymer which imparts flexibility and/or resiliency to the prosthesis. The swellable fluid absorbing polymer may also provide the surface of the prosthesis with lubricity. In embodiments, the prosthesis has a first configuration and a second configuration, the first configuration being of reduced size relative to the second configuration. The prosthesis may also include a reinforcement member. In embodiments, the prosthesis includes a stem projecting outwardly from the frustum.

    摘要: A soft, expandable, implantable device sized for spacing between small bones comprising a first smooth surface on which a first small bone may slide. Implant (700) includes an opening (704) (passage) extending through the device for promoting fibrotic development through the opening from a direction from both thumb metacarpal (202) and trapezium (204). Passage (704) is optionally distally positioned from a one-way inflation valve (706) included inside an inflation port (702) substantially limiting possible damage to the device due to the insertion pressure of an expansion fluid. An inflation cannula and/or needle may be attached to inflation port (702) and inflation valve (706) for introducing the expansion fluid into the device. Implant (700) is inserted in a deflated mode and is positioned so that thumb metacarpal (202) abuts distal side (703) of the device when expanded and trapezium (704) abuts proximal side (701). Both distal side (703) and proximal side (701) include a smooth surface for allowing relative movement of thumb metacarpal (202) and trapezium (204) with respect to device (700).

    摘要: Basal thumb joint implant has a head with a smooth, generally hemispherical, medio-proximally directed, articulating surface, and a generally abrupt, distally directed, truncation thereto; and a stem attached to the head, which arises from the truncation of the head and includes at least one of the following features: A) a general angle of attachment to the head which is acute in relation to the truncation of the head; B) a flanged cross-sectional stem profile; C) an inwardly curved stem; D) an eccentric head attachment site for the stem. The implant may be one-piece or modular in construction. The modular basal thumb joint implant, however, which is not necessarily limited by requiring inclusion of the aforesaid additional features A-D, includes a head with a smooth, generally hemispherical, medio-proximally directed, articulating surface, a generally abrupt, distally directed truncation thereto, and a stem trunion-receiving cup in the truncation; and a stem attachable to the head, which stem has intracarpal spike-like distal end, and a proximally directed trunion, which trunion is insertable into the stem trunion-receiving cup of the head. Other digits may be provided with analogous implants, particularly with respect to those digital implants amenable to modularity.
