A strip rolling mill includes a pair of upper and lower work rolls for rolling a strip, intermediate rolls for supporting each of the paired work rolls, and back-up rolls for supporting each of the intermediate rolls. Each of the work rolls is provided with a tapered portion at a vicinity to one end thereof in such a way that the tapered portions of the work rolls are on opposite sides of roll bodies thereof with respect to roll axis directions. The rolling method for the strip rolling mill comprises the steps of: when the material with a constant width is being rolled, setting axial positions of the work rolls at appropriate positions and changing axial positions of the intermediate rolls to control a thickness distribution in a width direction of the material being rolled. This arrangement significantly improves an edge drop and at the same time minimizes edge drop variations, thereby preventing surface defects from occurring on the surface of the material being rolled and performing an efficient rolling operation.

Due to the axial offset of the tapered roll barrel ends which can be achieved in this manner, the support curve of the work rolls 1, 2 in the edge regions of the rolled strip can be finely adjusted. In addition, the support curve in the center region of the strip can also be adjusted if in each case one of the two work rolls 3, 4 associated with each work roll 1, 2 is contoured.

These working rolls have ends and each have therebetween an effective axial length equal to at least 1.3 times the effective axial length of the respective backup rolls. Actuators are connected to the working rolls for displacing same axially relative to the backup rolls through an axial distance equal to about their own effective axial lengths between end positions each engaging only about half of the respective backup roll. A selector feeds to and through the stand a group of strips comprised generally of pairs of strips wherein the combined width of the strips of each pair is generally equal to the working-roll width. A controller is connected to the actuator for positioning the working rolls of the stand with their ends at one edge of one of the workpieces of each pair and at the opposite edge of the other workpiece of the pair.
