A continuous casting machine (1) for steel materials has a continuous casting die (6) with a casting mold (10) formed of broad-side plates (11) and narrow-side plates (13) and at which piston-cylinder units (16) are provided as actuators and support bearings. The position of the piston-cylinder units (16) is measured by field measurement devices (21), the measurement data are stored in a control (23) of the continuous casting machine (1) via fieldbus modules (22) as BUS signals and, after being processed, are fed back to the actuators as control signals. In order to acquire and process the measurement data locally at the continuous casting die (6), it is proposed that a respective hydraulic cylinder (16a) is connected to a valve stand (24) with a stationary terminal box (25) for the measurement signal lines and control signal lines (28) and that the terminal box (25) is connected to an axis regulator (30) from which the fieldbus module (22) supplies the signals to a memory-programmable control (31).

A first inclined surface and a second inclined surface are provided on the inside of a mold to constitute a so-called two-step tapered mold. A mold powder is adjusted to have a total content of CaO component and SiO2 component of not less than 50 wt %, and a content of F component of not more than 11 wt %. The inclination rates of the first and second inclined surfaces are set according to the basicity or solidification temperature of the powder to be used. The pore area of molten steel discharge ports of a dipping nozzle is set to not less than 2500 mm2 to less than 6400 m2. The discharge angle of the molten steel discharge ports is set, based on the horizontal, obliquely downward to not less than 10° to not more than 35°. According to such a continuous casting method, solidification delay at angle parts of a bloom can be suppressed.

More particularly, the speed of the output slab and the temperature of the molten metal contained within tundish are measured and the pressure exerted by the received molten metal within mold is determined. The period of width changing operation is divided into a forward taper changing period in which each narrow face is inclined toward the center of the mold and a rearward taper changing period in which each mold wall is inlcined away from the center of the mold. The acceleration of the horizontal movement of each narrow face is determined by means of allowable shell deformation resistance as a parameter for each period. Also is determined the angular velocity of the rotary device or the difference in velocity between the upper and lower ends of the narrow face. The width changing operation is conducted while maintaining the acceleration and the angular velocity or the velocity difference at constant levels in respective periods.

Heat flux waveforms or heat flux values commensurate to extracted heat values at various positions of a mold are measured by means of thin plate type surface heat flux meters (14, 14x, 14y, 14z) provided at various positions on side shell plate (11, 11c) of the mold (10). When an abnormality or a deviation from a target value is detected, pouring rate is changed, scope of supply, brands and the like of mold powder are controlled, or taper value of short sides of the mold is controlled, so that a breakout or/and a crack of the slab is prevented.

In a mold having a pair of narrow side walls, a method for reducing the mold width during continuous casting of molten metal includes, as a first step, inwardly moving the upper end portion of at least one of the narrow side walls while maintaining the lower end of that side wall fixed. Thereafter, as a second step, the whole narrow side wall is uniformly moved so that the lower and upper end portions move in parallel. Then, as a third step, the lower end portion of the narrow side wall is moved inwardly until the side wall is inclined at a predetermined angle, thus completing the mold width reduction.

A method of controlling the cooling rate of narrow side walls of plate molds during continuous casting, wherein the narrow side walls are fixedly clamped between the wide side walls, prior to start of the casting the hollow casting compartment between the narrow side walls is provided with a casting taper which converges in the direction of travel of the cast strand or casting and which is accommodated to the quality of the steel and the width of the strand. Prior to the start of the casting operation the casting taper is additionally adjusted to a reference value which corresponds to the contemplated casting speed and/or casting temperature, and upon deviation of the casting speed and/or casting temperature during the casting operation the casting taper is changed in accordance with reference values corresponding to such fluctuating or changing casting parameters.
