An adjustable drill is provided comprising a drill body having at least one face surface with a plurality of serrations provided therewith. The drill further has at least one cartridge having a cooperating plurality of second serrations, to be driven with the drill body when assembled therewith. The at least one cartridge includes at least one insert pocket, and at least one insert is releasably affixed in the insert pocket provided in the cartridge. In further examples, the adjustable drill may have a central cutting system in combination with the adjustable cartridge type system, wherein the central cutting system may be modular. There may also be provided a modular type of holder arrangement to provide flexibility to adapt the system for various applications.

At least one cartridge is selectively mounted adjacent the face surface and selectively slidable along the directional feature to provide adjustment. At least one insert is releasably affixed in an insert pocket provided in the cartridge. A toolholder for indexable cutting inserts includes a holder body forming an insert site. A pin projects upwardly at the insert site for entering a center hole of an insert. A clamping wedge is attached to the body by a screw. A rear end of the wedge engages an inclined supporting surface of the body, and a front end of the wedge engages the insert. By tightening the screw, the front end of the wedge pushes against the insert simultaneously downwardly and forwardly to press the insert against the pin and a floor of the insert site. The front end of the wedge includes a pair of forwardly projecting upper protrusions for engaging the top face of the insert, and a pair of forwardly projecting lower protrusions for engaging an edge face of the insert. The upper protrusions, and also the lower protrusions are disposed on opposite sides of an imaginary plane which contains the axis of the pin and the axis of the clamping screw.

In a cutting tool having an indexable cutting insert with three cutting portions, the cutting insert is removably securable to an insert holder by means of a fastener. The cutting insert has two opposing end surfaces with a peripheral side surface extending therebetween. At least one end surface has a central boss protruding therefrom with a raised support surface, and the peripheral side surface has three abutment recesses. In an end view of the cutting insert, each of the three abutment recesses is visible and located inside a first imaginary circle circumscribing the visible central boss. A holding portion of the insert holder has a seating surface with at least one protuberance protruding therefrom. The support surface is in clamping contact with the seating surface, and exactly two of the three abutment recesses are engaged with the at least one protuberance.

An indexable double-negative cutting insert includes an index axis A, two opposing end surfaces, a peripheral side surface which extends therebetween, and opposing side cutting edges formed between the end surfaces and the peripheral side surface. A median plane P is located midway between the end surfaces, passes through the peripheral side surface and is perpendicular to the index axis. The peripheral side surface includes at least one protrusion which extends in an outward direction relative to the index axis, in a plan view of either end surface. The protrusion includes two side abutment surfaces which converge in the outward direction towards the median plane P. In each cross-section perpendicular to the median plane, which cross-section passes through both opposing side cutting edges and also the at least one protrusion, no portion of the peripheral surface is inward of an imaginary line connecting the opposing side cutting edges.

An indexable double-negative cutting insert includes an index axis A, two opposing end surfaces, a peripheral side surface which extends therebetween, and opposing side cutting edges formed between the end surfaces and the peripheral side surface. A median plane P is located midway between the end surfaces, passes through the peripheral side surface and is perpendicular to the index axis. The peripheral side surface includes at least one protrusion which extends in an outward direction relative to the index axis, in a plan view of either end surface. The protrusion includes two side abutment surfaces which converge in the outward direction towards the median plane P. A drilling tool for drilling bores in solid metal, with a shank having at its front end several geometrically similar indexable inserts arranged at various radial distances and staggered with respect to each other by the same peripheral angle, whose working areas overlap, each of them having two equally long cutting edges, two of the respectively contiguous cutting edges inclined with respect to each other at an obtuse angle being simultaneously engaged, whereby the radial inner indexable insert extends slightly with one of its engaged cutting edges beyond the drill axis, at least one of the bisectors of the two pair set cutting edges of indexable inserts being inclined with respect to the longitudinal shank axis by an angle up to 25.degree. m and at least one of the bisectors running at an angle differing from zero with respect to another bisector, so that the sum total differing from zero of the radial force component (F.sub.R) resulting from all engaged effective cutting edges and the corresponding sum of the horizontal force components (F.sub.H) form a general resultant (F.sub.RES) acting upon the cutting edges and which is oriented in the direction of the radially utmost indexable insert at an angle (.beta.) differing therefrom by maximum 45.degree..
