    摘要: A tooling assembly (10) is disclosed having a plurality of tool holders (18, 20) for independently driven cutting tools (14, 16), the tooling assembly adapted for automatic insertion and removal from a spindle assembly (12). The plurality of cutting tools (14, 16) are disclosed as arranged to be able to simultaneously machine concentric round features on a workpiece (8), such as a valve stem guide bore (9) and valve seat (7). The tooling assembly (10) includes inner and outer tool bodies (30, 24) rotatably mounted together, each carrying a tool holder (20, 18), the tool bodies (30, 24) rotated at different speeds. A coupling arrangement for the tooling assembly includes an outer draw bar (82) moveable to couple the tooling assembly (10) to the spindle assembly (12), and an inner draw bar (84) separately coupled to moveable element (20) to enable independent axial advance of one of the cutting tools (14) by axial movement of the inner draw bar (84) and coupled moveable element (20).

The characteristics of the tool are that the second part of the tool (5) is divided and has two sections (39, 41) of which a first section (39) consists of carbide and is assigned to the precision interface (17) and a second section (41) consists of a material which is more ductile than the material of the part of the tool (3) and which has at least one blade (13) for the second part of the tool (5).

A device is provided for adjusting the position of the insert relative to the carrier element and a clamping device is provided using a clamping claw, with which the insert can be fixed in the adjusted position relative to the carrier element in that the clamping claw presses the insert flat against a support surface. In order to be able to use indexable inserts of any form without providing weakening openings and to obtain the greatest possible measure of free space for configuring the tool and shaving removal with a space-saving configuration of the adjusting and clamping apparatus, the insert is accommodated in a pocket of the clamping claw and the support surface is directly constructed on the carrier element.

    摘要: Valve seats are machined at the end of an axially deep, narrow cavity of a workpiece having an axially clampable surface within the cavity adjacent one or more valve seats. The method comprehends: (a) supporting a rotary driven spindle assembly of sufficient length to extend through the axial extent of the cavity and reach the valve seat, the spindle carrying a cutting tool at its extremity, the support being in a nonrotatable housing effective to fit closely to the interior of the cavity (within a tolerance of 0.01 inches) and effective to move along the axis of the cavity to bring the cutting tool into machining contact with the valve seats; (b) securing a radially rigid but axially resilient diaphragm to the end of the housing, the diaphram extending transversely across the interior of the cavity; (c) afer inserting the housing and spindle into the cavity so that the cutting tool is proximate the valve seat but out of contact therewith, axially clamping a portion, of the diaphragm remote from the spindle, against the axially clampable surface; and (d) moving the rotary driven spindle assembly axially toward the valve seat to conduct machining contact of the cutting tool therewith, the axially resilient diaphragm providing accurate supporting alignment for the tool under even high speed machining conditions.

The precision interface (17) is a squat conical connection, comprising a first plane surface (19) on the first tool part (3) and second plane surface (21) on the second tool part (5), arranged perpendicular to a mid-axis (23) of the tool (1) and, in the assembled state of the tool (1), lie adjacent to each other, said first tool part (3) being made from steel. The tool is characterised in that the second tool part (5) is divided into two sections (39,41) of which a first section (39) is made from a hard metal and is provided with the precision interface (17) and a second section (41) is made from a material which is more elastic than the material of the first tool part (3), and comprises the at least one cutter (13) of the second tool part (5).
