摘要： Illumination apparatus for use in localized illumination applications, such as an automobile dashboard. The apparatus includes a light emitting diode mounted on a metallized circuit board; a TIR lens mounted over the light emitting diode to collect light emitted from the light emitting diode and to direct the light in a single direction; and a light pipe disposed over the light emitting diode and the TIR lens. The light pipe has walls extending from the circuit board to a plane above the circuit board such that directed light from the TIR lens is channeled through the light pipe to the plane. The apparatus can also include a cover disposed in the plane over the light pipe. The cover may be integrally molded to the light pipe and have an icon configured therein, such that the icon is illuminated by the light from the light emitting diode. A lens may also be placed over the cover of the light pipe to create a focused image of the icon, thereby maximizing the light emitted by the light emitting diode at the focused image.

摘要： An instrument preferably employable for a vehicle includes a dial and at least one pointer for indicating the present operative state of the vehicle such as a running speed, an engine speed or the like through a window glass. The dial is illuminated from the rear side by activating a dial illuminating unit, while the pointer is illuminated indirectly via a reflective coating film formed thereon by activating a pointer illuminating unit. The pointer is rotated in a normal direction via a stepping motor when an ignition key is shifted to ON, while it is rotated in a reverse direction when it is shifted to OFF. The instrument is additionally provided with a pointer mask plate made of an opaque plate-shaped material and placed between the window glass and the pointer. The pointer mask plate is located below a zero calibration on the dial and at least the window glass side of the pointer mask plate is blackened without any optical brightness like a frosted glass. When the ignition key is shifted to OFF with a driver's hand to stop running of the vehicle, the pointer is rotated in the reverse direction in excess of the zero calibration on the dial toward the minus angle side of the instrument. Thus, when the window glass is exposed directly to sunlight while the ignition key is shifted to OFF, the pointer can not visually be recognized from the outside because it is fully covered with the pointer mask plate.

摘要： An apparatus and method for using an output device such as an LED to show the approximate analog level of a variable electrical signal wherein a modulating AC waveform is superimposed either on the signal or a reference voltage, both of which are then fed to a comparator which drives the output device. Said device flashes at a constant perceptible rate with a duty cycle which varies in response to variations in the level of the input signal. The human eye perceives these variations in duty cycle as analogous to variations in the level of the input signal.

摘要： In order to permit the simultaneous variation of the illumination of a clock and the illumination of instruments included in an instrument panel of an automotive vehicle or the like, a single illumination control device is connected with the ignition switch and a lighting control switch in a manner that when the lighting switch is on, the voltage applied to the bulbs which illuminate the clock and the instrument panel are simultaneously controlled while the tail lamp bulbs are constantly energized to their normal level when only the ignition switch is on, current is fed to the clock illumination bulb. The resistance inherently provided by the plurality of bulbs used in the instrument panel and tail lamp assemblies prevents illumination of the same under such circumstances.

摘要： An automobile electric system including an electrically operated device such as an air conditioning device which is controlled by a control switch and light devices such as head lights which are controlled by a light switch. The control switch is provided with an illuminating lamp which is adapted to indicate the switch positions and the location of the switch. A control circuit for the illuminating lamp is provided so that the lamp illuminates the control switch when the switch is actuated, with a sufficient brightness in day time to show that the switch is actuated, but with a moderate brightness in night time wherein the light switch is actuated. Further, in night time, the control switch is illuminated with a weak light when the control switch is not actuated only to indicate the location of the control switch.

摘要： A self-luminescent indicator which may be employed in a tachometer, a speedometer, or other such gauges in automotive vehicles. The self-luminescent indicator comprises an indicating pointer, a luminescent element, and a semitransparent member. The indicating pointer includes a housing and a cover. The housing has formed therein a groove. The luminescent element is disposed in the groove of the housing. The semitransparent member is arranged within the cover of the indicating pointer for diffusing light emitted from the luminescent element out of the indicating pointer. The semitransparent member has side walls extending substantially parallel to each other in a vertical direction parallel to a given optical path of the luminescent element. With this arrangement, the indicating pointer projects light having uniform and high brightness to an observer without having the light experience total reflection in the semitransparent member so as to improve the visibility of pointer deflection over a dial plate.

摘要： An automotive instrument cluster has closely spaced face plate and circuit board and a compact gauge including a housing mounted on the side of the circuit board facing the face plate. A light conducting pointer has a two-part snap-together hub extending into the gauge housing and an end face adjacent surface mount LEDs on the circuit board for direct pointer illumination. A gear on the hub is driven by another gear on a stepper motor which is offset from the pointer hub. The stepper motor has a permanent magnet armature supported by the housing and the circuit board, and surface mount electromagnets on the circuit board to provide a motor field.

A disk-like needle plate 8, which is driven to turn in accordance with given measuring quantities, is made of light diffusion base material. The needle plate 8 is disposed on the front side of the character plate 1. A transparent slit 9 as a needle shining when it receives back-light, which is formed on the needle plate, is extended up to the circumferential outer end of the needle plate 8.
