The present invention is directed to a purified polyalkylsiloxane composition having a boiling point, under atmospheric conditions, of less than about 250.degree. C. and containing high boiling impurities, including siloxanes and silanol-terminated siloxanes, that have boiling points, under atmospheric conditions, of greater than about 250.degree. C. in a total concentration of less than 14 ppm. The present invention is further directed to a method of producing a purified polyalkylsiloxane composition, having a boiling point, under atmospheric conditions, of less than about 250.degree. C., by distilling a polyalkylsiloxane starting material containing high boiling impurities having boiling points, under atmospheric conditions, of greater than about 250.degree. C. in a total concentration of at least 14 ppm, under conditions effective to produce a purified polyalkylsiloxane composition having a boiling point under atmospheric conditions of less than about 250.degree. C., and containing high boiling impurities, having boiling points, under atmospheric conditions, of greater than about 250.degree. C., in a total concentration of less than 14 ppm. In preferred embodiments, low boiling components (including silanols and preferably also hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane) are reduced to less than about 100 ppm. The present invention is further directed to a method of producing fused silica glass by conversion of the purified polyalkylsiloxane composition.

Disclosed is a process of producing an optical fiber preform having a step of charging a feedstock gas in an oxygen-hydrogen burner via an electrode and hydrolyzing the same in an oxygen-hydrogen flame to produce particulates containing charged glass particulates and a step of blowing the charged particulates onto a target comprised of a seed rod or a soot body formed on the seed rod so as to cause them to deposit on the target and build up as a soot body. Preferably, the process includes the further step of reducing the magnitude of the charge of the particulates in the burner along with an increase of the diameter of the target which is formed. More preferably, the process also includes the further step of making the position facing the burner across the target an opposite polarity from the charging polarity of the particulates ejected from the burner so as to electrically attract the particulates ejected from the burner.

A device is disclosed for supplying a glass raw material gas in the form of the mixed gas consisting of the glass raw material gas and the carrier gas to a vapor deposition device for producing a preform of an optical fiber, the supply device including a secondary raw material container having a pressurizable interior and provided adjacent to a main raw material container. The bottoms, or areas near the bottoms, of the two containers are interconnected via a pipe including at a mid portion thereof a switching valve and a device for adjusting the flow rate of the raw material liquid between the two containers. Liquid level detectors are provided in one or both containers to maintain the constant volume of the liquid raw material so as to provide a constant state inside the main raw material container. The operation of this device can easily be entirely automated.
