Water-soluble urethane-urea polymers are prepared by the reaction of polyoxyalkylene glycols or copolymers of polyoxyalkylene glycols or blends thereof with an excess of organic polyisocyanates to form an isocyanate-terminated prepolymer, partially curing the prepolymer by exposing it to atmospheric moisture, and then chain-extending with a diamine. The reactions are carried out in the absence of a solvent.

Stable urea group-containing dispersions are obtained in situ by reacting carbon dioxide with an amine in the presence of a continuous phase carrier. These amine/carbon dioxide condensation adducts dispersed in the carrier are employed in the formation of polyurethane foams, polyurethane elastomers and coatings, and polyurethane microcellular foams.

A polyurea foam is formed from a reaction mixture comprising at least one polyisocyanate component and an active hydrogen component, wherein active hydrogen compounds of relatively high equivalent weight have an average of about 1.5 to about 10 active hydrogen-containing groups per molecule, of which active hydrogen-containing groups: an average of (a) from about 5 to about 60 percent are primary or secondary aliphatic amine groups or (b) at least about 25 percent are primary aromatic, Lewis acid-blocked primary aliphatic, secondary aliphatic or aromatic amine groups or mixtures thereof. Carbon dioxide is adducted to said active hydrogen component. The adduct releases carbon dioxide to blow the foam.

Improved, flexible, open-celled polyurethane foams of reduced density, but with stability and firmness characteristics comparable to those of standard foams, are described. The foams are formed in situ from the reaction, in the presence of a catalyst, of an isocyanate, one or more blowing agents including water, a foam stabilizer, a polyether polyol, and a liquid salt produced from the reaction of CO.sub.2 with a water-soluble amine or amino alcohol. Preferred amines or amino alcohols for the CO.sub.2 salt include primary amines and polyols which contain primary amino end groups, secondary amines which contain primary hydroxyl groups, and a variety of low molecular weight aminohydroxy compounds. The liquid salt is present in the foam formulations in an amount of at least 2 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of polyol.
