A method for making a phosphor composition is provided. The method includes the steps of providing a first phosphor comprising a visible-light-emitting phosphor; providing a second phosphor having an average primary crystallite size of less than about 100 nm and disposing the second phosphor onto to the first phosphor. The second phosphor includes at least one phosphor selected from a group consisting of a visual light emitting phosphor, ultraviolet (VUV) light emitting phosphor and a quantum splitting phosphor.

Luminescent compositions are described comprising lanthanide-containing nanoclusters comprising lanthanide atoms bonded to at least one semimetal or transition metal via an oxygen or sulfur atom. Novel compositions include an antenna ligand complexed with the nanoclusters. The rare earth-metal nanoclusters are in the size range of 1 to 100 nm. Articles, such as solar cells, are described in which the nanoclusters (with or without antenna ligands) are dispersed in a polymer matrix. Novel methods of making luminescent films are also described.

A UV-emitting phosphor and lamp containing same are described. The phosphor is a praseodymium-activated pyrophosphate-based phosphor which may be represented by the general formula (Ca2-x,Srx)P2O7:Pr where 0≦x≦2. The phosphor is excitable by vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation and in particular it may be excited by Xe-excimer discharges and thereby provide a Hg-free UV-emitting lamp. The phosphor exhibits a broad emission in the UVC region in the wavelength range from about 220 nm to about 280 nm with the peak emission occurring in the wavelength range from about 230 nm to about 240 nm. The emission characteristics of the phosphor may be varied depending on the ratio of Sr/Ca.

A process for preparing a water resistant luminous pigment with durability, characterized in that a luminous pigment, in which an oxide matrix comprising at least one element selected from the group consisting of Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba and Zn and at least one element selected from the group consisting of B, Al, P and Ga is doped with at least one rare-earth metal element, is allowed to an acid treatment under the condition of pH of not more than 3 using at least one acidic compound selected from the group consisting of acids and acid generating compounds, and is subsequently allowed to an alkaline treatment under the condition of pH 4-9 using at least one alkaline compound selected from the group consisting of alkalis and alkali generating compounds.
