A directional drilling system and method are provided for directional drilling a borehole by continuous rotating of the drill string in combination with an arrangement of drilling motor assemblies at the lower end of the drill string to effect drilling along a curved path and a substantially straight path. A first drilling motor assembly is coupled to a drill bit and operable to rotate the drill bit to effect drilling of the borehole. A second drilling motor assembly, positioned on the drill string above the first drilling motor assembly, is operable to rotate the first drilling motor assembly in a direction opposite the direction of rotation imparted to the drill string from the surface and to the drill bit by the first drilling motor assembly. A control system associated with the second drilling motor assembly controls fluid flow through the second drilling motor assembly so that the first drilling motor assembly is substantially rotationally stationary with respect to the rotating drill string when drilling a curved path of the borehole.

A casing tube can be pulled out of the hole/pushed into the drilled hole. A tubular, rotatable drill rod tube resides in the casing tube. The hammers are located in a circular shape and are each attached to the outer surface of the drill rod tube by joint/hinge attachments lying essentially in the drilling direction. Rotation of the drill rod tube in a first direction turns the hammers and associated bits outwardly from the drill rod tube, and rotation in another direction turns the hammers with their bits inwardly towards the drill rod tube so that they can be pulled away with the drill rod tube from inside the casing tube.

A reciprocable impact hammer (10) for use in a downhole location comprises a tool support member (11); a hammer member (12); a jack mechanism (13); a connector member (14); and a transmission (16). The transmission (16) converts linear motion of the connector member (14) to rotary motion of the hammer member (12) whereby when a force acts on the connector member (14) via the hammer member (12) and the tool support member (11) operation of the jack mechanism (13) causes initial elongation of the impact hammer (10) followed in succession by: (i) collapsing of the hammer member (12) and the tool support member (11) together such that the hammer member (12) separates from the connector member (14) and imparts an impulse to the tool support member (11); and (ii) movement of the connector member (14) towards the hammer member (12) under the influence of the force whereby the transmission (16) causes rotation of the remainder of the impact hammer (10).

Three air hammers are housed and arranged in a hammer case, and have bits at their respective ends. Each of the air hammers can be activated independently. In a normal excavation, the earth is excavated by activating all the air hammers. When correcting an excavating direction, only an air hammer positioned in the correct direction is activated first so that the earth in the correct direction is excavated in a predetermined amount. Next, all the air hammers are activated to excavate the earth. Thereby, a leading hammer can direct the excavation toward the correct direction, and thus the excavating direction is corrected.

The present invention provides an apparatus and method for partially rotating a drill string. The drill string of the present invention comprises upper and lower sections wherein the lower section rotates relative to the upper section of the drill string from the surface at the injector head. The upper and lower sections of the drill string can comprise coiled tubing, jointed tubing or a combination of coiled and jointed tubing. The lower section of the drill string comprises a bottom hole assembly (BHA), which comprises a drill bit and downhole drilling motor. A rotational device is positioned within the drill string in order to rotate the lower section. Upon activation of the rotational device, the lower section of the drill string will be exposed to a continuous rotation. By partially rotating the lower section of the drill string, static friction forces are overcome, the probability of differential sticking of the drill string is reduced and the cuttings produced during drilling are prevented from settling on the bottom (low side) of the wellbore, thereby maintaining a clean wellbore by dragging the cuttings back into the main fluid path.

A downhole motor operated by circulating mud fluid in the wellbore is revealed. The motor has nested rotors and is geared to a bit drive. The motor is a dual-rotor pump that is operated as a motor with mud flow through the rotor housing on end connections. The structures of the rotor housing and the rotors can be made of the same material. An angular offset can be incorporated between the centerline of the output of the motor and the bit drive. In the preferred embodiment, the motor output is through a gear located within a bigger gear connected to the bit so as to provide a speed reducer. The drive between the rotors and the bit can accommodate angular offsets of a predetermined amount for directional drilling. The design is compact and can be used to drill wellbores as small as about 21/2" in diameter, or even smaller.

The bottom hole assembly of the present invention includes a drill bit driven by a positive displacement drilling motor, the motor being constructed of tubular housings, one of said housings having a bend so as to cause the bit to drill directionally, another housing containing a rotor and stator to generate power, and a flexible section between the power generation housing and the bend. A stabilizer is disposed on one end of the flexible section for engaging the wall of the borehole and the housing with the bend includes a wear pad for engaging the lower side of the borehole. The bottom hole assembly contacts the borehole at three contact points, namely at the stabilizer, the wear pad, and the drill bit, for producing the necessary build-up rate, along with the bend, and thus the curvature of the borehole being drilled. The flexible section has a stiffness which is less than the stiffness of the housing of the stator and has a stiffness which is on the order of 33% or less of that of the power generation housing. The stiffness is determined by the selection of the material, wall thickness and length of the flexible section such that the desired flexibility is achieved, but the necessary torsional strength and axial load capabilities are maintained. The purpose of the flexible section is to allow the bottom hole assembly to be configured to achieve high build rates, on the order of 20 to 70 degrees per hundred feet, without generating excessively high loads and stresses on the bit and other bottom hole assembly components.

A connector having a flowbore therethrough has one end attached to one end of the upper rotor and another end connected to an end of the lower rotor. The upper and lower rotors have a bore therethrough for the passage of drilling fluid. The flowbore of the connector communicates with the bores of the upper and lower rotor whereby drilling fluid may pass through the bore of the upper rotor, the flowbore of the connector, and the bore of the lower rotor. The drilling fluid exits the lower rotor through a port adjacent its lower end. The connector includes transition bores at each end to avoid turbulent flow through the connector.

An apparatus comprising a rotatable tool having a drill head and a method for regulating the penetration of the apparatus in rock or soil are disclosed. In particular, the apparatus and method of the invention are designed to prevent damage to drill bits mounted on the drill head when any one of the drill bits encounters an excessive opposing force as, for example, would result if the drill bits impacted a rock when drilling in soil.
