    摘要: Apparatus for moving a vessel heater cover including upper linkage, lower linkage and a bell crank. The bell crank is pivotally secured to the upper and lower linkage. The lower linkage includes first and second pivot points. The first pivot point connects the lower linkage with the cover and the second pivot point connects the lower linkage with the connector link. A source of power is provided for effecting rotation of the connector link about the second pivot. Counterweights may be provided and be pivoted about the second pivot. The first pivot may include a gimbal providing two axes of rotation for the cover disposed generally perpendicular to each other. Compressible insulation in the cover may project downwardly to provide automatic sealing with the vessel cover. The mechanism provides automatic compensation for misalignment between the vessel rim and the cover.

    摘要: Pieces of steel scrap are charged into a ladle by a magnet on a crane so that the central part of the charge is substantially denser than the peripheral part. A cover having a plurality of natural gas-oxygen burners mounted around its periphery is then placed on top of the ladle to obtain a substantially gas tight container except for a flue opening and some small openings due to a non-tight fit between ladle and cover adjacent the top. The burners direct their flames downwardly parallel to the sidewall of the ladle and the combustion gases are discharged through the flue opening. The flames are reducing in nature and the container is under a positive pressure. The heating is continued until the scrap is at a temperature of at least approximately 1,500*F and preferably approaching the melting point of the scrap. Molten iron in substantially greater weight than the scrap and having a substantially higher carbon content is then poured into the ladle so that the majority of the scrap is melted. The mixture is then easily poured from the ladle into the oxygen converter.

    摘要: An assembly for use in mounting a lid on a kiln body. An anchor member is mounted on a side surface of the kiln body defined by a metal outer layer of the body, which anchor member has a horizontal pivot pin fixed adjacent its upper end. Spaced hinge portions are attached to the periphery of the lid and have surfaces defining through openings receiving and being pivotable about the pivot pin, including generally vertically extending surfaces that afford vertical movement of the lid relative to the pivot pin to accommodate vertical expansion of a ceramic lining in the kiln during heating of the kiln. The assembly also includes a force transfer structure including (1) a pivot portion pivotably mounted on the pivot pin and projecting from the pivot pin along the periphery of the lid and above the upper surface of the lid, and (2) a transverse portion attached to an upper part of the pivot portion. That transverse portion has a lid bridging part spaced above the upper surface of the lid and having a distal end attached along the periphery of the lid at a location opposite the pivot portion to afford pivoting of the lid relative to the transverse portion about an axis parallel to that of the pivot pin. The transverse portion also has a force receiving part projecting from the side of the upper part opposite the lid bridging part and having a distal end to which is attached one end of a tensioned spring having its opposite end attached to the anchor member. That spring applies a force to assist manual lifting of said lid through the pivotably attached end of the transfer portion in a way that does not interfere with movement of the lid during heating and cooling of the kiln.
