Disclosed herein are an X-ray imaging apparatus and a control method therefor in which a region of a compressed breast is measured by a touch sensor and a collimator is controlled such that an X-ray emission region corresponds to the measured region of a compressed breast, whereby workflow for performing X-ray imaging may be reduced and subject pain due to breast compression may be alleviated. The X-ray imaging apparatus includes an X-ray source to generate X-rays and irradiate an object with the generated X-rays, a collimator to adjust an emission region of the X-rays generated from the X-ray source, an X-ray detector to detect X-rays having passed through the object to acquire X-ray data, a touch sensor disposed above the X-ray detector, a compression paddle to compress the object placed on the touch sensor, and a collimator control unit to calculate location and size of the compressed object based on an output value of the touch sensor and control the collimator based on calculation results.

A planimeter includes a movable housing in which are mounted orthogonally aimed x- and y-position sensors. Each position sensor comprises a piezoelectric ultra-sound transmitter and receiver for sending ultrasound to a reflector disposed on a drawing and sensing resultant echoes. Circuitry in the housing computes from the sensor outputs the housing's position for each of a sequence of locations on a drawing at which a user positions the housing, and from those it computes scaled distances between those positions as well as quantities that can be derived from those distances. The transmitter's and receiver's respective positions with respect to positioning crosshairs are such as to suppress the results of orientation errors. The planimeter's handle is angled at 45° to the directions in which the sensors are aimed so that it lends itself to both right- and left-handed operation.

A surface pressure distribution matrix of detecting elements requires no positioning operation during a manufacturing process and does not vary in sensitivity depending on where surface pressure is applied to the matrix. A large number of transistors in a matrix form are formed on a single semiconductor substrate. A flexible film having a conductive coating is formed over the matrix of detecting elements. The collector electrodes of a plurality of transistors are commonly connected to each other to form rows in the matrix, each row being electrically isolated from the other rows. The base electrodes of the plurality of transistors are commonly connected to each other to form columns in the matrix, each column being electrically isolated from the other columns. When the flexible film receives a surface pressure from the ridges of a fingerprint, the depressed portions of the conductive coating on the film are brought into contact with the matrix of detecting elements. As a result, the transistors in the matrix turn on in the pattern of the fingerprint ridges. Shift registers scan the on/off states in the matrix of transistors to detect the fingerprint pattern. One embodiment uses bipolar transistors. Another embodiment uses MOS field effect transistors.

A method and apparatus for determining the extent of contact between an electrically conducting tube and an electrically conductive tubesheet surrounding the tube, based upon the electrical resistance of the tube and tubesheet. A constant current source is applied to the interior of the electrically conducting tube by probes and a voltmeter is connected between other probes to measure the voltage at the point of current injection, which is inversely proportional to the amount of contact between the tube and tubesheet. Namely, the higher the voltage measured by the voltmeter, the less contact between the tube and tubesheet.

Wheel type electronic sheet material area measuring machine comprises means for emitting a test start signal, operated either manually or automatically at a particular point in the machine cycle, and test means actuated by the test start signal to cause material detecting means associated with each wheel to emit a signal normally indicating presence of sheet material for a predetermined length of travel of a conveyor surface on which the material is normally supported, the wheels running on the conveyor surface. Thus each of the signalling means associated with the wheels should, if the machine is operating correctly, emit a number of test signals. The signals emitted by the signalling means of each wheel of a group of wheels are added and compared with an acceptable range of numbers of test signals which would be emitted in respect of that group if the machine is functioning within the predetermined tolerances. A warning is given if any of the groups of wheels are not within the predetermined tolerances and the machine is prevented from measuring area until functioning correctly. Preferably similar tests are run in respect of small groups of wheels e.g. ten and in respect of a group consisting of all the wheels, e.g. overall machine accuracy.

One oscillator including each coil responds to a pass of the workpiece through the associated coil to change in oscillation frequency. A difference between changes in frequency of both oscillators or a ratio between them is measured to provide a measure of a difference or a ratio between cross sectional areas of the workpiece in the planes of both coils.
