A digital based two wire proximity transmitter system and a method for calibrating the system, wherein the transmitter includes a customized linearization table uniquely generated during calibration to take into account the unique impedance properties of a particular probe/coaxial cable configuration. During calibration, the probe is positioned adjacent a calibration target. The calibration target is selected to have the same material characteristics as the target to be monitored during actual operation of the transmitter in the field. At a fixed distance between the probe and calibration target, the resonant frequency of the probe/cable system is determined. Thereafter, utilizing this resonant frequency to excite the probe, the voltage response of the probe/cable system is determined as the distance between the probe and the target material is incrementally changed. The voltage output is used to build a table for incremental distances, wherein each distance is characterized by a non-linear output that has been equated to a linear output. This uniquely generated table is subsequently downloaded into the transmitter for reference during monitoring.

Methods and devices are provided for monitoring the condition of the running gear of a railcar utilizing acoustic/motion/vibration sensors mounted on the railcar while the railcar is underway. For some embodiments, utilizing this sensor data, defects in the running gear may be detected, and this information may be used to alert an operator to the defective condition. Operated in conjunction with a GPS or similar location detection device, a plurality of sensors mounted on a plurality of railcars may also be used to identify damaged or worn sections of track.

A frequency measuring device measures a natural frequency of a reactor jet pump sensing line supported by a sensing line support bracket in a nuclear reactor. The frequency measuring device includes a base member, a sensing line clamp attached to the base member that attaches to the sensing line support bracket, and at least one actuator attached to the base member. The actuator is positioned relative to the sensing line when the sensing line clamp is attached to the sensing line so that the actuator can strike the sensing line. A proximity probe attached to the base member measures vibration of the sensing line and outputs a vibration signal. A processor receives and processes the vibration signal from the proximity probe to determine the natural frequency.

A vehicle noise, vibration and harshness analysis tool according to the present invention comprises at least one sensor, each sensing a vibration or noise and generating a signal at a frequency related to the vibration or noise. A communication link with a vehicle is included to transmit data regarding the vehicle. A microprocessor system receives the signals generated by said at least one sensor and receives the vehicle data over said communication link. The microprocessor system conducts an analysis of the received sensor signals and vehicle data and identifies a vehicle component that is likely causing a vibration or noise. The microprocessor system also identifies the possible problems with the identified vehicle component. A user interface is also included with a display. The microprocessor system causes the display to list the likely vehicle components causing the vibration or noise and the possible problems with the components. The list of likely components and causes helps the technician quickly isolate and remedy the cause of the vibration or noise. The invention also discloses methods for balancing a driveshaft using analyzers according to the invention.

One of the embodiments, called a FLEX METER is a frequency measuring device which employs a series of reeds mounted on a base member each reed being adjusted to vibrate at a maximum amplitude when a vibration having a designated frequency is applied to the base member. Each reed is identified with a designated frequency. A light emitting diode associated with each reed emits light when a reed responsive to the vibration of the implement has an amplitude sufficient to make an electrical connection to a closely positioned contact. The devices are all small in weight, size and are portable and convenient to use with the implement.

The PSP provides an indication of periodicity and a generalization of potential fault, whereas characteristics of the associated waveform indicate severity. A “periodic information plot” (PIP) is derived from a vibration signal processed using two analysis techniques to produce two X-Y graphs of the signal data that share a common X-axis. The PIP is created by correlating the Y-values on the two graphs based on the corresponding X-value. The amplitudes of Y-values in the PIP is derived from the two source graphs by multiplication, taking a ratio, averaging, or keeping the maximum value.

The engine operation control module selectively adjusts at least one of a speed of the engine and a load on the engine when the second vibration level is less than the first vibration level.

A method and system for establishing sets of blade frequency values for each rotating blade of a rotor assembly at two or more different points in time and determining an indication of blade health from the change in the blade frequency values is provided. Blade frequency values are determined by receiving measurements of vibratory responses from blade monitoring equipment (20) and processing via a processing device (30) vibration data as a system of rotating blades to extract a frequency of each blade. Sets of blade frequency values are compared to determine a change in the blade frequency values for each rotating blade to provide the indication of blade health.
