An apparatus for imprinting a stent configuration image from a mask form onto a tubular stent blank. The stent blank has a longitudinal axis and a photosensitive coating on the outer surface thereof. The apparatus includes a journaling mechanism adapted to receive the stent blank, and operable to rotate the stent blank about its longitudinal axis; a radiation source operable to direct light at a first surface region of the stent blank when mounted in the journaling mechanism, to thereby expose the photosensitive coating on said first surface region of the stent blank; and a mask form movement mechanism configured to mount the mask form in the apparatus and to move the mask form along a path in which the mask form contacts the stent blank in said first surface region thereof along a concurrent convex arcuate segment.

Disclosed herewithin is an apparatus for fabricating a stent which involves processing a tubular member whereby no connection points to join the edges of a flat pattern are necessary. The process includes the steps of: a) preparing the surface of a tubular member, b) coating the outside surface of the tubular member with a photo-sensitive resist material, c) placing the tubular member in an apparatus designed to simultaneously rotate the tubular member while passing a specially configured photographic frame negative between a light source and the tubular member, d) exposing the tubular member to a photoresist developer, e) rinsing the excess developer and uncured resist from the exposed tubular member, f) sealing the inner lumen of the tubular member, and g) treating the tubular member with a chemical or electro-chemical process to remove uncovered metal. By modifying the photographic negative, this process can be employed to fabricate a virtually unlimited number of stent designs and configurations.

The present invention is directed to an expandable stent which is relatively flexible along its longitudinal axis to facilitate delivery through tortuous body lumens, but which is stiff and stable enough radially in an expanded condition to maintain the patency of a body lumen such as an artery when implanted therein. The struts of the present invention have a specific trapezoidal, triangular or a reduced radii configuration projecting radially outward that functions to reduce the forces necessary to penetrate the vessel wall thereby minimizing trauma or damage imparted to the wall during deployment. In addition, this design feature of the present invention helps secure the expanded stent so that it does not move once it is implanted and furthermore, minimizes projections into the blood stream. The invention generally includes a plurality of radially expandable loop elements which are relatively independent in their ability to expand and to flex relative to one another. The individual radially expandable elements of the stent are dimensioned to minimize the strut from twisting or rotating during expansion. Interconnecting elements or a backbone extends between the adjacent loop elements to provide increased stability and a preferable position for each loop to prevent warping of the stent upon the expansion thereof. The resulting stent structure is a series of radially expandable loop elements which are spaced longitudinally close enough so that the obstruction, vessel wall and any small dissections located at the treatment site of a body lumen may be dilated or pressed back into position against the lumenal wall. The manufacturing process of the present invention utilizes optimized stress-strain curve characteristics to achieve, unlike other non-wire stent designs, improved mechanical properties throughout the stent. The optimized stress-strain curve of the materail increases both the yield strength and the ultimate tensile strength of the expanded stent, increasing its resistance to structural failure (fracture) or stent crushing.

An assembly for producing printing plates from photopolymerizable resins includes an upper fixture assembly and a lower fixture assembly. The upper fixture assembly includes an upper glass plate, and an upper shutter box in which an upper UV light source is located. The upper fixture is mounted on a guide post so that the upper fixture assembly can be raised and lowered relative to a lower fixture assembly. The lower fixture assembly includes a lower light bank table containing a lower UV light source, and a lower glass plate on which the resin layer is cast. A doctor blade is drawn over the resin layer to smooth the latter on the lower glass plate. The resin layer is then exposed to UV light through a print pattern-defining negative so as to selectively harden the resin layer and form a printing plate that is defined by the negative pattern. In order to maintain the flatness of the lower glass plate, and thus the thickness of the resin layer during the doctor blade step, a support post is positioned in the lower fixture to support the center of the lower glass plate. The support post has transparent portions so as not to interfere with subsequent light transmission to the resin layer.

A double-sided exposure apparatus is disclosed. The apparatus incorporates a phototool die set that provides high accuracy, speed and smooth operation with minimal particulate contamination of the exposure zone while allowing conventional work piece transport and handling. Upper and lower die halves are supported by four corner posts, guided by precision preloaded bearings to obtain high accuracy in front to back registration of art works maintained in the upper and lower die halves. The die halves are reversibly separated by upward motion actuated by a closed loop servo motor and lead screw system simultaneously elevating the four corner posts to which the upper die half is rigidly attached.

A method of and apparatus for exposing boards which are photosensitive on both sides, for production of printed circuits on both sides, to light through films on both sides in which a lower film, a board, and an upper film in registered position on a light-transmitting platen are pressed down by a window and exposed to light on both sides through the platen and window, the window, gripping the upper film, is raised, the exposed board is removed, another board to be exposed is applied to the lower film on the platen, the window is lowered to apply the upper film to the new board, and the procedure repeated.

A holograph high resolution contact printer for use in transferring high resolution information, which is in the form of a pattern on a transparency, from the transparency to the light-sensitive photoresist material front surface of a light-recording medium having a light insensitive substrate rear surface, in which the light-sensitive photoresist surface previously has been exposed to a preselected diffraction grating, but the recording medium has not been developed. The contact printing apparatus, in its most basic and generic preferred embodiment, includes: a light emitting source, in which the emitted light need not be coherent; a light-impervious member, disposed forward of the emitted light, having a circular aperture through which passes a portion of the emitted light; a double convex lens forward of, and in optical alignment with, the aperture of the light-impervious member, with the passed portion of the emitted light impinging upon the lens; a selectively rotatable diffuser, positioned forward of and in optical alignment with the lens, with light transmitted by the lens impinging upon the rotating diffuser and, in turn, being transmitted by the diffuser; and, appropriate component(s), forward of and in optical alignment with the diffuser, for holding and supporting the transparency and the light-sensitive recircling medium in abutting contact, with the accomplishment of the desired result of transferring the information pattern that is on the transparency to the light-sensitive recording medium, when the diffused light impinges upon, and is transmitted through, the transparency. After development of the recording medium, a relief forms on the photoresist. This relief records, in the depth of the material etched away, the high resolution now stored in and on the recording medium. Unlike the prior art, this contact printer permits the storage, the display, and the duplication of high resolution information on frames as large as 9-inches by 9-inches, or in the format of 9-inch continuous web data.
