The tool presetter is mounted in a composite lathe having a pivotal tool spindle stock 17. A method for synchronously interlocking feed axes of a lathe is disclosed. In particular, a numerical controller (NC) controls the operation of a lathe by sending position command signals to servo amplifiers. The lathe turns a long workpiece chucked by two opposed headstocks which are driven synchronously. The servo amplifiers send signals to corresponding directional servo motors for moving the headstocks in respective directions. The present invention overcomes the problems of mechanical and workpiece displacement developed as loads on the servo motors by compensating for the positions of the feed axes by means of position offset values determined from the displacement of the machine or workpiece. Specifically, the displacements are detected in accordance with a difference between the torque of the two feed axes to be controlled for synchronous interlocking. In this manner, the displacement of the machine or workpiece is compensated for by moving the headstocks, which are synchronized in the corrected positions.

If the controlled object corresponding to each coordinate system is driven, the coordinate system data is read from the coordinate system data memory when the coordinate system data belonging to the coordinate system except the coordinate system in which the controlled object is driven is needed. The read coordinate system data is converted from the coordinate system to which the corresponding coordinate system data belongs into the other coordinate system to which the controlled object belongs on the basis of the coordinate position relation information in the coordinate relation memory, and the controlled object is controlled on the basis of the converted coordinate system data.

Each servomechanism loop includes a controller, and switching is provided by which the inputs and outputs of the various controllers can be switched to control different ones of the movable machine members. Each controller has a data storage register for storing the instantaneous value of error signal of its servomechanism loop. Upon changeover of a particular member from one controller to another, the error signal data in the storage register of the outgoing controller is transferred to the error storage register of the incoming controller, so that the error signal data remains associated with the member being controlled, and no inaccuracies are introduced into the position of the controlled member.
