Abstract: Embodiments for a terrain following (TF) radar configured for use in an airborne system are generally described herein. In some embodiments, a radar return comprising dual polarimetry radar data is processed to determine a Correlation Coefficient (CC), a Differential Reflectivity (ZDR), and a Specific Differential Phase (KDP). Discriminator logic is applied to the CC, the ZDR and the KDP to determine whether the radar return comprises solely rain. Further signal processing may be performed on the radar return when the radar return does not comprise solely rain. When the radar signal comprises solely rain, the radar return is tagged as a rain return. Applying the discriminator logic may include applying linear and/or quadratic functions to the CC, the ZDR and the KDP to determine whether the radar return comprises solely rain.

Abstract: Systems and methods for machine-learning-based aircraft icing prediction use supervised and unsupervised learning to process real-time environmental data, such as onboard measurements of outside air temperature and dew point, to predict a risk of icing and determine whether to issue an icing risk alert to an onboard crewmember or a remote operator, and/or to recommend an icing avoidance maneuver. The systems and methods can use reinforcement learning to generate a confidence metric in the predicted risk of icing, to determine a time or distance to predicting icing, and/or to not issue an alert or recommend a maneuver in consideration of historical data in a “library of learning” and/or other flight data such as airspeed, altitude, time of year, and weather conditions. The predictive systems and methods are low-cost and low-power, do not require onboard weather radar, and can be effective for use in smaller aircraft that are completely icing-intolerant.

Abstract: A method for controlling an autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle for delivery of a medication package includes determining a thermal control period for the medication package. The method also includes identifying a delivery location corresponding to the medication package. The method also includes identifying at least one environmental characteristic of an environment that includes a delivery three-dimensional flight path between a starting location and the delivery location, wherein the at least one environmental characteristic indicates an actual weather value at the delivery location. The method also includes determining whether to deliver the medication package based on the thermal control period and the at least one environmental characteristic, using the unmanned aerial vehicle.

Abstract: A highly safe drone is provided. A remote controller and a drone are connected to each other through a network and cooperate to operate. The drone system has a plurality of states including a takeoff diagnosis state and satisfies a condition transitioning to another state. The drone system makes the drone to takeoff after transitioning to the takeoff diagnosis state upon receiving the flight start command.

Abstract: Drone-based inventory management method and systems. One embodiment provides a drone-based inventory management system including one or more unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and a central management system having an electronic processor, and a transceiver configured to communicate with the one or more UAVs. The electronic processor is configured to determine a discrepancy in inventory and select a UAV for verification. The electronic processor is also configured to determine whether weather permits UAV operation and operate the UAV in a pre-determined route when the weather permits UAV operation. The electronic processor is further configured to capture images using the UAV and determine new inventory based on captured images. The electronic processor is also configured to update inventory based on the new inventory.
